Looking for a new wheelset......

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a new wheelset......

Hey Everybody,

Im looking for some new wheels to put on my Tarmac that would be an improvement over the stock Aksiums.
I would like to keep it around or under $500.
Right now Im looking at WilliamsCyclings.com's System 19 wheel [URL="https://williamscycling.com/"] and was wondering if anyone has had previous experience with these wheels.
But I am open to any other suggestions.
I would like to keep the weight of the wheels around 1500g

Thanks for any help,
-Leon

Fulcrum 5s seem good, not particularly "better" than what you have. Easton makes the Circuit, NOT the II,the Circuit. I've seen Rolf's on sale. The Mavics you have are light, maybe not the strongest, LIGHT though You would need to go 450 or so,rather than $400 to make a meaningfull up-grade. Campy makes some interesting spoked-in-group-wheels, Scirroco, Vento etc. The Reynolds around the net seemed to have disappeared. Wheels have a very fickle following, like lady's handbags.

Fulcrums under $500 would be too heavy for the OP. For that weight you would be looking at Fulcrum 1's around $900+.

I think the reynolds alta race is around 600 and is 1500 grams.

But seriously, give mike garcia a call. He's super cool every time I call him and he can get you a set of aerodynamic sub 1500g wheels with top of the line cx-ray spokes for like 550 shipped.

Fulcrum Racing 1's are around 1500, ridiculously stiff, impossible to knock out of true (so far) and look HAWT on a Specialized.

I just want to say that if you upgrade your wheels, UPGRADE your wheels. Don't go mid-end. Go high end (reasonably high end, i'm not talking about $1500 wheelsets). 1500g is a good weight to be shooting for.

You can add the Shimano 7801-SLs and, the Bontrager Race X Lites to the list of first rate wheels worthy of being considered. Of course they are over the target price of $500 but hey, it's only money.

Might want to check around to see if there's a good wheelbuilder locally. I ordered a new wheelset today with Velocity rims, ultegra hubs and DT spokes. With Gatorskins, it'll be about $500. It's nice to talk to the wheelbuilder about different components, spoke counts, etc. so he can make you something that will be best for you.

Just for perspective. The Askiums aren't particularly light (close to 2,000 grams per pair), but from what I've read they do pretty well in the "aero" and stiffness departments (there's a web site somewhere that grades these things).

I have a pair, and I'm happy with them, but I don't have any illusions that they are anything more than a decent value at their price point, which I believe is around $200-$250 per pair. I have never ridden real good wheels to compare.

For me, I wouldn't consider investing in a wheel unless it got down to 1500 grams with good aero-ness and decent stiffness (I'm only around 165 lbs and don't ride all that hard or fast).
