Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone ever read: "Bicycling Medicine" By Arnie Baker?

It looks intriguing enough at only 10 bucks, but the information is almost a decade old. With the field of medicine constantly changing how does this book stack up?

Any insights from M.D's that have this book would be awesome.

Never read it, but what about the recent one by Andy Pruit(?). I believe that one came out within the last year or so. <$20 if I remember correctly - Velopress.

I was not impressed with this book. It is organized like a reference work, and so has no narrative thread, and does not hold a reader's interest. It makes banal points.

Here are some excerpts: Under subtitle 'Nutrition', there is a sub-subtitle named 'Avoid Fatty Milk'. Under the subtitle 'Tips to Help You Lose Weight', sub-subtitle 'Dieting', Item #1 is: 'Eat only when you are hungry.' Sturdy advice here. Later, there is another sub-sub-sub-subtitle named 'How to Take Aspirin'.

I doubt there is any value in this book for you or anyone remotely near the right side of the bell curve.

It IS a reference work ... not a story book. Anyone remotely near the right side of the bell curve would know that.

Not kidding about the aspirin thing. Machka, there is a section just for you entitled "Fiber Hints". Right in that reference book that you own, sitting right beside you now.

Ok, I bought both books (Arnie Baker's Bicycling Medicine and Andy Pruitt's Complete Medical Guide For Cyclists)

I actually found Arnie Baker's book (Bicycling Medicine) to be a much better read and value. Although it is over a decade old a lot of what he writes on is still relevant today. Some of his training methods are a little out of date but most of his medical advice is still relevant.

I found Pruitt's book anything but complete! This is one of the worst cycling books I have read. It was just released recently and has up to date information but there is barely any good information in it. He is soo sparse it would be better to just log onto bike forums and use the search button.

Summary:
For training needs: get Joel Friels Training bible
For "Quick" med. advice get Arnie Baker's Bicycling Medicine
For a paper weight get Andy Pruitt's

An oldie but a goodie!

For being soo highly endorsed this book sucked:
