Gash in tire...how big is too big?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gash in tire...how big is too big?

No pictures sorry...but I got two small cuts in my Conti GP rear tire this weekend.
It didn't flat the tire but the inner tube pushed enough to make the tire bulge just a bit (1/4 inch or less)
(the tube is not pushing through yet...)
Took the tire off and the gash did not make it through to the inside.

Because:
-tires not very expensive
-if it blows it can be dangerous and inconvenient

I've decided to get a new tire anyways....but:

-Would you throw out the old one and buy new or try and fix it somehow?
-Buy a similar tire to keep the front/back pair matched or just buy whatever tire even if it doesn't match?

If there is any question I usually throw them away.

yeah... I think its not worth the hassle...
I've read other posts like this on BF and generally the conclusion seems to be just replace it....

The slight bulge concerns me

....mismatched tires a faux pas?
(not that I care very much)

Sounds like the tire cords are damaged. Sometimes you can repair the tire by booting it on the inside. Personally, I would only do that long enough to ride home, then toss the tire. I do know people who have ridden booted tires for hundreds of miles with no problems.

If you are an OCP, matching tire colors is a must.

You could put a layer or two of duct tape on the inside and save it for an emergency.

...yeah, I'd probably chuck it.

I personally like my tires to match, by brand and model. Age is not a factor for me. If my rear tire goes, I just replace that one. On the other hand, if you are running cheapos now, why not upgrade both?

Or you could just buy an extra new tire and use that in an emergency. Unless you're a real cheapskate, use the patched tire on the trainer, if anything.

mmmm....I'm not really a cheapskate but the Open Corsa'a are like $50+ a piece on sale (yeah PBK sells for 37 but they're out of stock and I need them tires now!) So I may just go anti-OCP and get one for the rear and keep the conti's up front....sigh...I was hoping to give shopping a rest for a while but here I go again!

Gonna check the local performance shop and the LBS's on the way home....screw it, ditching early right now!
