Any good mountain climbs in mid/western mass?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You could ride Rt2 to the NY-Mass border, go down the other side, and then climb back up into Mass. From the NY side its like 5mi at 6% or something like that.

Mt. Greylock is closed till '09

I'm not familiar with western mass climbs yet.

In Central Mass, the best climb around is Mt. Wachusett.

If you're down near Ware, MA (near the southern end of Quabbin Reservoir), head west on Rt. 9 for a bit and you'll come across the entrance to Quabbin State Park. There's a good climb in there (especially if you're heading back east) up to some observation tower at the summit. There's zero traffic in there (parts of the road are closed to car traffic, although you can just ride around the gates).

Here is a nice little loop around the Northfield Wendell area. Start in Montague at the discovery Center and head to Northfield Via Route 63. A Very nice ride with low traffic except on 63 to Northfield. If you want to challenge yourself on the ride you can climb to the top of the Northfield mountain on the way to Northfield. You can also add on a trip through Sunderland and Leverett which would increase the mileage to 80+.

I don't know if this is what you are referring to, but Jiminy Peak, in Hancock, has mountain biking trails and I think you can take your bike up on the chair lift and and do the idiot thing on down.

The balanced rock park in Pittsfield has trails that are free and are shared by motorcycles, and ATV's.
