Hills are uh..interesting!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hills are uh..interesting!

O.K. so I decided to do a little hill workout in the middle of a 30 miler(9 mile loop with some good-sized hills)

So, after about 4-5 hills(300m to 600m approx 8% to 12% grade) and I'm pounding them pretty good, I turn the corner and off in the distance a half mile away is the hill of doom! this sucker was sickly steep especially at this point in the ride. Well, down i go into my easiest gear 42X whatever and about halfway up POW ----------my poooey what just happened......... well my bracket that holds the two shifter cables blew...maybe too much torque (old bike Too!-84 Raleigh)

Well, now I'm stuck in 5th gear and a couple more hills are out of the question(time to walk) and once i get out of the loop i head back over to the bike path and 5th gear it back to the car(10 miles)

all in all could have been a worse day but lessons to be learned i suppose!

Well I be back to take em' on again

Wow that hill was super steep!

What are some nasty steep hills you guys climb that only cause pain and hurt! And what would you estimate the grades at!

300 to 600m ascent at 8-12% is far more grueling than anything around here. I do occasionally find a few hills that steep, but they're for 600 feet absolute max, not meters

Philly's NW section has a few nice little hills. I have no idea what the grades are, though.

If any Philly folks know the ballpark grade of the following hills, please let me know (I tried toporoute and there was weirdness, I know something is wrong...probably me): a) Midvale Avenue climbing from Kelly Drive to Henry Ave. b) Germantown Pike climbing from Northwestern Ave. to Chesnut Hill Ave.

Anyway, they make my routes fun.

The road up to my house is like one of your shorter ones, 300m @ 11.5%; but I would not describe my style as pounding it pretty good, particularly at the end of a ride. At least I can ride it now; when I first got back into biking I had to walk the last bit.
