I usually average 20+ mph, 23mph on a good day with no wind, but in the last month it seems that a tailwind is nothing but a myth. Nothing but nonstop-in-your-face wind. I hate living on the lake.
But alas, I don't care about average speed anymore. I usually average at 18.3 on my regular 62 mile route, the vast majority is flat, but I've got 8-10 hills which are all leg-breakers to climb, they probably make up 7-10 miles of the route.

Nagedzi 05-29-07 05:23 PM

It really depends on my training goals for the day and the time of the year. Typically, Zone 2 rides hover around 30 km/h (18.6 mph). During the winter, these go down to about 27 km/h in the wind and rain. During the summer though, I typically will do 31 km/h. If I'm riding Zone 3 (Tempo) during the warm months, speeds will go up to just over 35 km/h (21.7 mph). Time Trials, of course, are significantly faster as you ride in an aero position without stoplights. For these, I do about 42 km/h (26 mph).

Turkey Feathers 05-29-07 05:36 PM

18.5-19.5 mph average for my 21.6 mile out and back evening loop, with 1250 feet of climbing, and 20 road crossings / stop lights, on a good ride I'm lucky to only have to stop for half of them...

waterrockets 05-29-07 05:49 PM

I'm usually training at around 16-17 mph. In a TT, I'm slow by Cat 3 standards, at around 25.5 mph. I only go that fast solo once a month or so.

blonduathlongrl 05-29-07 06:17 PM

Pretty flat here, but always windy, 30 miler is anywhere around 17 to 19 depending on just how windy it was.

DataJunkie 05-29-07 06:21 PM

Averages are pointless unless everyone is riding the same route in the same conditions. That being said I average 14-15 mph on the way in to work. For some strange reason I just do not feel motivated to hammer it in to work. :p
My quickest solo ride occurred yesterday. 69.2 miles at a 19 mph average. I was riding a route with very small hills and sat in my drops 90% of the time. Basically the flattest route I have ever seen around here. I doubt I will replicate this anytime soon.
I generally tend to average in the 16-18 mph range solo.

Ryleeryno 05-29-07 06:25 PM

18.5 - 20mph on my typical 35 mile route with 1,300ft of climbing. Today it was 18.8mph.

chzman 05-29-07 06:40 PM

how sad, 89% of you are faster than me

Flak 05-29-07 06:55 PM

I'll have what i feel like a terrible ride, and the next day ill have a great one on the same route. I always seem to average about 18.5mph. Rolling terrain.

To be honest, the battery on my computer has been dead all year, and I really don't miss it...I suggest you try a ride with no electronics, it's quite refreshing.

Yeah, what he said....

I average 17 to 23 mph solo, depending on the "variables" which are many many many

Pharmr 05-29-07 07:01 PM

15-16mph rides vary from 15 to 25 miles....mostly flat and almost always a headwind for the return leg....I'm not to fast now, but I'm getting faster every ride!!

Why aren't you riding with the A's on wednesday man?

garysol1 05-29-07 08:19 PM

normally 19.7 to 20.5 or so. Flat with a few small hills.....

supertj 05-29-07 08:26 PM

I average about 16.2 - 16.7 mph solo depending on the wind in a 29 mile ride commute. Its mostly rolling inclines with a small hill at the end that tires me out. First 4 miles of the ride I go at a 13-15mph pace and then for the rest, I'm cruising at 20mph++. At some point of the ride I sustain 30mph for 30 seconds on a nice steady decline.. There's a lot of traffic lights. 3 months ago my avg was like 13mph. I'm definitely getting faster and enjoying it! My goal is to average 20mph and sustain that for an hour at minimum and not be exhausted at the end of the ride.

Jay Gloab 05-29-07 08:33 PM

I have yet to have a ride in which I averaged as high as 15 mph -- but I just got my first road bike today.

So, let's be honest, what is your usual average speed on a typical solo ride of at least 20 miles? Don't cheat by giving your fastest ride or by adjusting your average upwards to account for traffic or stop signs....these are all part of th e ride. Honestly, what would you usually average on a typical day from doorstep to doorstep?

With the wind blowing off Lake Eire you ought to be averaging 40 mph at least for half your ride.

clausen 05-29-07 09:34 PM

Avg. speed only apply to route being ridden. Just look at the avg. speed for pros over different TTs. Same riders different routes.

Interesting thread.

I'm 23, about 18 years of riding of mountain bikes during the summer. Picked up a road bike last week, and have been riding a lot. 04 Fuji Newest

In my 25 mile ride I can average 18 mph pretty steadly. Oddly, 19 mph for a bit, and 20 mph for short intervals. 20 mph seems 10x harder than 18 mph. 22 or so plus for very short bursts.

HAMMER MAN 05-30-07 04:22 AM

depending on wind conditions and other variables, here in Texas anywhere from an average of 16-21.5 mph .

botto 05-30-07 04:29 AM

i confess that i don't give a shizzle about average speed. honest.

About 13-15 computer average speed with no wind.

About 16-18 computer average speed with slight tailwind.

I love tailwinds. :D

I'd agree if only I actually knew what a shizzle was.
