Are 10 Campy Brifters compatible with Shimano 9 speed Ultegra?
I have a 9 speed Shimano Ultegra setup from 1999. I really like the feel of my other Campy equiped 10 speed bike. Also the right brifter makes a ton of noise when I hit any sort of road bumps. I've had other riders laugh at the sound that bike makes. Will a new generation Campy 10 speed brifter be at all compatible with the 9 speed Ultegra rear deraileur? If not, what's the fewests number of parts I could switch out? For example could I keep my current crank (48/38T) and maybe change out the deraileurs and brifter and rear casette/hub?

This needs to be a sticky somewhere: http://www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm. Looks like model#2 solves your problem.

Thanks a million.

Actually, the cheapest solution is to go on ebay and bid on old 9 speed centaur or veloce shifters and buy number JTEK # 3 (assuming you have 9 speed shimano cassette and wheel). Expect about 80 dollars for used veloce or maybe 100 dollars for used centaur 9 speed shifters. The total should add up to about 130 dollars at most, cheaper than a slightly used set of 9 speed 105 shifters.

I ended up buying a set Campy 10 speed Veloce Ergopower levels and a #2 JTEK. About $200 total.
