Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got chased by a deer this morning.

I got up early for a ride this morning. I rode in a beautiful, foresty part of my town where the hills meander left and right to eventually merge into one moutain up ahead. Anyways, as I was riding and mentally humming to the song "my milkchugs bring all the boys..." I hear a rustling sound in the forest. I thought it was a mountain lion as these guys are frequently seen where I live. I got really scared and quickly dial up to 400 watts for the run of my life. Because I was in the middle of my climb, it was very difficult to continue my pace. I then give up and pant while raising my bike over my head to make myself appear big in the event that the lion approaches me. It turns out that it was a dam deer. It scared the crap out of me for nothing.

You've been using 'Scent of a Doe' perfume again, haven't you.

You know that's stuff is Deer urine, right?

I don't use perfume. But I am blessed with the genetics of good smelling body odor.

The deer wanted to see if you were riding a Shimano or Campy drive train.

Was the deer riding or was he hoofing it?

Did you notice if it had a Blackburn rack?

Bet his bike cost a lot of doe.

There now, no one else will have to do that.

Did you start yelling and stuff? I would've paid like $20 to be there to witness that.

And here I was, expecting a chase, some sirens, perhaps even some paramedics and/or deer steak. A "rustling sound in the forest" hardly qualifies as a chase, I'm afraid.

On my ride this AM, I heard a rustle in the grass, and a rabbit shot out - he looked like he was going to leap into the spokes, but I barked at him (don't ask me why - it's the first thing I thought of). He paced me for about 10 yards, then pulled off into the weeds.....

Interesting, same thing happened to me not too long ago, but it was a squirrel. Today, I'm a little embarrassed when a car passed by with the driver oogling at me standing on the sidewalk with my bike raised over my head. He must think I'm a nut.

At least it's unlikely you'll get a deer through the spokes... I live in fear of suicide squirrels... my wheels are apparently designed to attract the little fiends!

If the squirrel thought you were a nut, you wouldn't be here to tell the story.

You should get one of those ultrasonic "deer repellant" whistles and mount it on your bike.

I used to come face to face with black bears every few weeks on my morning bike ride to work in Trail, BC. Usually they seemed about as surprised as I was. But somehow I think they weren't as nervous as me about losing a scrap.

Something tells me that 3 out of 4 forest rangers wouldn't recommend trying to run away from a mountain lion unless you can dial it up to like 45 mph in a few strokes. Haven't you ever seen what happens to a mouse that runs away from a cat?!

It's "milkshakes," not "milkchugs," that bring all the boys to her yard.
