Black or White Tape and Seat? Need your opinion...

Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

Black or White Tape and Seat? Need your opinion...

I am building the following bike:

FRAME
Specialized Allez Comp E5, fully manipulated Columbus E5 SLX tubing, compact race design, FACT carbon seatstays w/ Zertz inserts 56cm
FORK
Specialized FACT carbon steerer and fork legs w/ Zertz inserts
HEADSET
Specialized Mindset Plus, 1 1/8" integrated threadless, cartridge sealed bearings, alloy 20mm cone w/ one 10mm and two 5mm alloy spacers
STEM
Deda Newton Road Stem, 31.8mm bar clamp. 100mm length
HANDLEBARS
Deda Newton Elementi Supernatural
TAPE / GRIPS
Deda White Bar Tape
GROUPO
Shimano Ultegra Double 10-Speed w/ Compact Crank & 11-23 Cassette
PEDALS
Shimano Ultegra PD-6610
WHEELSET
Bontrager RACE X LITE AERO Shimano Clincher
TIRES
Continental Grand Prix 4000
TUBES
Novara Presta Tubes
SADDLE
Fizik Aliante Gamma Ti White w/Carbon insert
SEAT POST
Specialized Carbon Seat Post with Zertz Inserts 27.2mm x 350mm
SEAT BINDER
Specialized CNC, alloy

I am buying the seat and the handlebar tape right now and I was wondering what color scheme went better with my frame. I really like the white but dunno if I should have a solid white bike. Here are some pictures to aid your decision. The last picture is the frame that I have.

Also if you have any opinions on the bike and parts feel free to post.

The answer has been the same for as long as I've been messing with bikes.

White's spiffier looking, Black stays spiffy looking longer.

Black. White get grungy too fast. Although, I just ordered a custom set of wheels with White Velocity rims, so I'm sorta contradicting myself....

White is OK on an OCP bike that only gets ridden to the neighborhood coffee shop. In the real world, white doesn't stay white for very long.

They both look great but the Black looks a little better and is much more practical. The white version is not is not the frame that you have. Correct? The black tape and seat bring out the black on the frame better IMHO.

Maybe everyone should have white tape and white seat just once to get it out of their system. Kind of like having a black car!

To all the nay-sayers on white tape: I've been using Fizik tape for two seasons now and it looks pretty much as good at the end of the season as it did at the start. It's not cork (Cinelli) or foam (Deda), so it's not going to absorb much grunge. A simple wipe down at the end of the week or the end of the ride keeps it looking fresh. True, it'll never be snow white like it was when it came out of the package, but it doesn't end up looking grey.

Yep will have to second that, being quite true. I've had my white tape stay white for quite long now, long enough in fact to have logged plenty of miles and fixed two flats and cycle-crossed my bike down a few stripped roads waiting to be repaved. That said, my hand had gotten pretty dirty. It does require a little maintenance, wiping the tape and hoods down, cleaning the gloves regularly, but it is indeed possible, and is generally worth it. Anyways, while I love the look of white tape and saddle, I can't see it looking all too hot on that frame. White looks best when setting off some more vivid and vibrant colors, like a deep red, or blue for instance.

I don't think I've mentioned it before, but I totally dig your Scott build. Excellent use of white.

I think RED would look sweet on that bike... especially if you get some red Keos, too.

Ain't she pretty? She gets those good looks from me! Thanks though! I'm actually in the midst of writing up a review for stray cat, as she runs as nice as she looks.

Also, I too had been admiring your bike that was just posted in the "what bike do you have thread". Regarding the bike, aside from it's great looks, I was curious as the bar you have mounted. I'm looking to try a traditional bend, and more shallow too, thus the FSA k-force "new" handlebar caught my eye. Is that what you have there?

Personally, I don't care much for the bends on the new FSA compact bars, but that's just me being a traditionalist. It's not shallow at all: it's actually Ritchey's deep version of the WCS Classic. 144mm drop, as opposed to their 135mm shallow version. I prefer the deep bars because with only a slight tilt, you can get an almost level transition to the hoods. It's possible to get a totally level transition , but aesthetically, I find that I don't like classic curve bars with that much tilt to them. You can always go with the FSA Energy T bars, which have the same dimensions as the Ritcheys. The way I have mine set up are perfectly comfortable, and you can always shove some foam under the tape to level out the little dip from the bar top to the hoods.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. So looks like the general thought is that I should not go white with having a white frame... I have been thinking about the red though, does anyone have any pictures or an example? I would like to see what the red would look like. Any other color ideas?

Also I should probably start a new thread for this section but I was right about to purchase my groupset from gottaridebikes.com when I noticed the new Ultegra SL is coming out... should I wait for it to come out and maybe get one or wait for it to come out so the price drops on the regular Ultegra or just screw it all and buy my set now.
