EXPLOSIVE Saturday ride...literally!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

EXPLOSIVE Saturday ride...literally!

OK...that was one of the most strange rides ever....

I'm ending up my standard, no-frills 26-mile ride when I notice that a couple of television helicopters were hovering. Then Flight For Life buzzed over my head.

Hmmm....maybe something happened?

I get home, call our newsroom....BREAKING NEWS....a house blew up nearby....several other houses damaged.

I grab my PRESS I-D and phone and jump in my truck...right off the bike in all my gear!

Next thing I know I'm interviewing witnesses on scene....doing live reports on the radio.....taking phone camera pictures....you can see some and hear me here:

Dying for for Gatorade and a shower, an hour later I leave the scene.

You should have seen some of the looks people were giving me as I interviewed people there in my kit!
(And it's hot and muggy here today too. Police were ready to put the yellow tape around me too!)

Hey, it's not nice to blow up a house just to cover the story. Unless it's your house and you make it look like an electrical thing so you collect the insurance money. It's a victimless crime.

....six hours later....they found the body of the elderly lady who lived there in the rubble.

Very sad.
Some sort of gas leak they suspect.

Sad indeed. I'm sure that was the last thing she'd though might happen.

...had to be instant.
There is nothing left of that house....rubble only.

We live about a mile away and Mrs. Hip was home at the time it blew....says our house even creaked...a mile away.

Just how close can carbon fiber get to an explosion before it's damaged. Better take it to the bike shop for a check over.

Sorry I couldn't resist. Sad to hear about the old lady, though.

If you smell a "skunk" in your house do not go into the basement to check it out. The mercaptan compounds used to oderize natural and other fuel gases smells like skunk scent. Do not even turn any electrical switches off or on. Just leave and call the gas supplier from outside a reasonable blast radius. One of the old gas receivers in Cleveland, I believe, blew about 1900 and did the damage of about a 2 kton nuclear bomb. But then thats about how much gas was in the receiver.

New meaning for OCP: Obsessive Compulsive Press. I mean showing up on the scene in full kit is admirable, but did you match the van the station sent? Did you use a carbon fiber mic? At least you drove over instead of riding over!

Looks as though the story made national news, just saw it on Yahoo's "US News" section.

So a neighbour's house explodes and then a sweaty guy in lycra turns up and wants to do an interview... wow I think I'd check myself in to the nearest hospital and ask for a cat scan!

Ma Journal

Ask Ma Journal for a raise - that's real dedication. As for going in full kit, I hope you at least took the shoes off.

Condolences to the family of the woman who perished. Maybe she was exceeding torque tolerences on a carbon fiber frame that exploded and it only looked like a gas leak.

What cat? Cat 3 I think would be appropriate.
