known bugs that eat carbon fibre frames?

Hey guys,

Are there any bugs out there known for eating carbon fibre frames? I mean there are quite a few bugs that eat cellulose, leather, and other materials. As carbon is the nutrient building blocks, I would assume that some bugs out there can, and infact, do eat carbon fiber. Anyone know? If they exist, are there any sprays on the market?

I need to know this before purchasing a new frame.

I'm not an entomologist, but I seriously doubt any living thing eats carbon fiber. Yes, carbon is the basis for all known life, but consuming molecular carbon (in a matrix) is a far different thing than consuming organic compounds. You need iron for your blood; do you eat iron ore?

clearcoat?

Yes, I had to call a pest specialist because termites were compromising the integrity of my frame

I sprayed the inside of mine with Raid prior to building...

I hear they eat this one....then again it is made out of the original type of carbon fiber....

Actually the last laugh is on the guys making fun of you... bugs that will eat your carbon fiber frame do in fact exist.

It can be hard to keep your frame safe from them... start with not storing it six miles beneath the surface of the ocean near volcanic activity, as that is where these micro-organisms live...

I found the below by a respected biochemist:

But microbes can't consume everything you throw away, especially trash from synthetic (man-made) materials. Plastic, for example, takes decades to disintegrate in a landfill. And glass, made from melted rock, can last for eons! Microbes can't devour many toxic chemicals, and many types of new synthetic materials like rayon aren't biodegradable at all. How to safely dispose of trash is an ever-growing challenge for all inhabitants on Earth. We can't depend merely on hungry microbes to clean up after us.

I assume carbon is plastic, ergo digestible by certain bugs and or microbes.

Der Jan eats of the carbon fibre with his schnitzle. Please to pass the mustard before the Jan does the crushing of your soul.

don't ride if you have crabs....that's just asking for trouble.

Carbon frames are composites of carbon fiber and epoxy. Epoxy is solid stuff, and I don't know of any bugs that eat it.

Maybe not bugs, but watch out for the sun and UV. It'll turn your CF into a puddle of CF. :D

Carbon fiber is subceptible to gamma ray bursts from near by stars, titanium isn't. Choose wisely.

FranckCisco 06-03-07 01:13 AM

would be cool if this thing is CF also. Extra stiffness just in case some bugs are half-dead and about to up and back for another round at my frame.

Yeah I had a real bad case of these little critters getting into my coal mine and infecting the whole damn crop of coal.
