Interesting discovery ... Topeak computer

Over the past two weekends, I made an interesting discovery about my Topeak computer .... it resets at midnight!

I have to say that's the first time I've ever had a computer reset at midnight, and the first time I've noticed this computer reset precisely at midnight. I have noticed it does reset periodically during my rides, but most computers do, so I didn't think much of it before. It's rather annoying!! Almost like Topeak doesn't think people ride past midnight or something.

Does your computer reset at midnight??

Explain ".., but most computers do, .."

Mine doesn't do anything but sleep after 30 minutes, unless I want it to ..

Mebbe it's a defective 'puter?

I've had many different computers over the years and most of them die somewhere in the middle of my long rides. It's like they can't handle anything over 400 kms.

But this resetting at midnight business is a new one on me!!

Interesting .. so, you are saying that if I do not reset the trip meter on my computer for >400km, it might reset?

Or is there something unique about 400km straight .. interesting indeed.

Well, I'm not sure if 400 is the magic number for most computers ... I just know that I'll be riding along glancing at my distance every now and then and see it increase to 200 kms, and 300 kms, and as the ride starts to get long, I'll glance down and my distance is something like 5.37 kms ... or sometimes, depending on the computer, just 0 where it stays for the rest of the ride.

Some computers seem to be able to hold out to 999.99 kms before they reset, others reset earlier, and this one that I have now resets to 0 at the stroke of midnight, no matter what my distance prior to that time was.

It's kind of disconcerting because I rarely know the exact distance I covered before it decided to reset or stop, so I can't add the sections up very accurately.

reset the clock when you ride so midnight will be 20 some odd hours away.

oh and thats kinda messed up.

But some of my rides are a lot longer than 20 hours ... I'd have to keep resetting as I go, or something.

And I'm afraid I suffer from VCR Clock Syndrome ... if I had a VCR, it would be flashing 12:00 all the time!! Once I set the time on one of these pieces of equipment, all memory of how to do it a second time vanishes from my brain.

Never heard of anything like that. Have you contacted Topeak? I just went through all the manuals on their site, and every one of their computers looks to be able to handle rides that are 999 hours long... why in the world would it be resetting at midnight?

Machka 06-04-07 10:38 PM

I haven't contacted Topeak yet ... I was debating about seeing if I still have the instructions for my model of computer first. I suppose I could look online for that too.

But the first time it happened, on my 600K, I thought I must have hit a button or something to cause it to reset, but at the same time I thought it was really weird that it seemed to happen at about midnight. So I really paid attention this past weekend, and sure enough ... 11:59 and .... reset!

Machka 07-23-07 11:15 PM

I just read through the instruction manual for my Topeak computer ... and sure enough it says this:

"DST/D: Daily Distance accumulates the ride distance over a 24 hour period. Data is cleared at 24:00:00 (00:00:00) automatically"

How bizarre!

.

HAHAHAHA - again with the long distance you! Sometime after 300K when the ride starts to get long.... *points index finger at head and rotates finger in circle - now you're all doing it to see what gesture I described...this is fun...*

Wierd about the computer. Should not happen, but I can see why it may. Some hard working engineer cut another corner because "no one will be riding past midnight....oh and to do it the right way will cost $XX,XXX more in development/hardware"

Perhaps its meant to be a 'feature' so that you don't have to worry about manually resetting your computer every morning. For the majority, rides don't go past midnight and into the next day, so it could be quite handy...

Why the little questioning smilie? In any given year I ride several rides that last more than 20 hours. I race 24-hour TTs and I'm a Randonneur.
