What road bike do you have?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do have a job, I worked all summer, but I'm going to greece/italy next year with my school, which has drained a lot of my cash. I also race motocross, which is not cheap

This is a big assumption, but I am going to go ahead and assume at 18 you are still under your parents roof. If this is the case, you need to remember that most of us have "real" bills including rent/mortgages, utilities, cars, groceries and many other smaller items that take up our expendable income. I remember when I was just finishing up high school and getting into college, I had tons of extra money for fun toys because I wasn't paying for much of anything. Keep this in mind. If you aren't still living under your parents roof, then don't mind me, and how the hell do you have extra cash floating around?

Thanks for the positive comments, everyone.

re: the fork - Honestly the look was what first attracted me, but I did some research and read some reviews and it seemed to be a good fit for my needs. It has a chromoly steerer, and is US-made. It can also fit bigger tires, which is pretty cool.

Here are a few more pics for those who asked. Sorry they're a bit on the (f)artsy side.

I really like the Wound Up forks. I would consider getting one when I feel like my Ouzo Pro needs replacing, but next to the big ol' tubes on my titanium steed, the legs look very skinny. It looks great on that bike.

2009 Cannondale CAAD9. Thompson Zero setback on the way so take it easy on the saddle position. I need to have the steer tube cut, and I'm going to replace the Tiagra once the season starts next year. The Tiagra works beautifully, but I'm not a Shimano fan anymore, and it's HEAVY. Bike weighs 21lbs with pedals, cages and a full bottle.

I spend enough money on gas each week to justify me not spending as much money as I would like to on my bike. I drive ~45 miles per day, 4-5 days a week just to go to school. Money's tight when you actually have to pay for your own things. If I didn't have to pay close to $3.50 per gallon every week, I would have lots of spare money. I remember back in the day when gas was only $1.3X a gallon.

But you'd be in such great shape if you rode ~45 miles per day AND you'd have all the extra money you would need.

Disclaimer: If your topography dictates you MUST drive, ignore my previous statement. That said - sell the car.

That sucks man, I'm still in high school and take the bus. Its not the "cool" thing to do, but it is cheaper. Riding isn't really an option because I would have to get up very early, and I would show up at school sweaty as a pig. Not to mention that there is no where to put my bike during the school day.

If I lived that far from campus when I was in college, and if I had the same workload and time commitments, I'd hardly have any time to sleep if I tried doing it all by bike.

I guess it varies by person then. I ride ~30 miles a day to work, have a 40-60hr work week, AND I'm a full time student for a BS in computer science, plus a wife and 3 girls. It's possible if you want to.

Edit - That's round-trip mileage.

A full-time computer student doesn't have the same workload as a full-time music major. Those computer kids could go home when the sun was still up while I was hammering out stuff for classes & ensembles only worth one or two credit hours apiece. Work? I tried -- after spending one summer taking phone orders, I told them what my semester schedule allowed, and they couldn't keep me.

Random non-music major kid at the beginning of the semester: "Sheesh, I'm signed up for FOUR classes this semester, just to get to 15 credits.."

Me (or any other music nerd): "Four? FOUR?!? Okay, let's see... concert band, wind ensemble, private lessons (performance major, so that's two credits), jazz band, piano, music theory, ear training, flute/double reed, and the required math & history classes... that's 16 credits. How many classes do you have again?"

Other kid: "Wow, man..."
