Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hahah yeah. I had it down there for a bit to test out how much I wanted to go down. I have a fit coming up so was going to leave it like that until we confirmed.

I have been riding for a little over 9 weeks now. have logged over 2000k miles and ride with fast group rides 5 days a week that include cat 1,2,3.

cycling is by far the most enjoyable thing i have ever done. as a ex distance runner with pr's of 14:58 for 5k 5000m. this is so much fun. I look to be racing early next year once i build up a massive amount of base mileage and hill and intreval workouts. I am currently looking for a good racing wheelset to purchase for racing road races as im not into the crit thing as much.( i want to do the longer races and not something that seems like a 30 minute sprint)

9 weeks in and I am riding at a 21-28 pace for 65 miles and not getting dropped finally.
Just curious but have you tried a crit?

I'm told that the ghost pages are a result of deleted posts that the forum software is still holding spaces for. In a thread this long that ends up being a couple of pages of deletes.

i say stick with black. you've already got some red in the wheels, don't wanna overdo it

Ha yea. She's a tad shorter than I am. But thanks, I'm pretty happy about two new rides. Both bikes have a fair amount of work to do before being dialed in.

JUST CURIOUS WHY YOU ASK SERIOUSLY? The answer is no of course. we do some training ones and i've talked with some team members about them as thats the race they do most. As a new rider im not trying to enter races till i feel i can compete. even if that means that i get out there and get dropped, i want to go into it at least believeing i can compete anyways. till then I will continue to increase my training and miles and be ready to go first of next year. Although i have though about doing a road race near the end of the season to get a feel for it. I just dont believe crits are for me. I see myself and my running background as a longer distance racer. not a 40 or 35 mintue racer where it seems you can be just strong and train for a 30 to 40 minute race. I know most enjoy crits on hereand theres nothing wrong with that. I support any cycling people do, but myself personal preference like the road races from what i seen. i like that fact im gonna be out there on the saddle for longer period of time... But any suggestion you give I will consider as Im new and take advice whenever offered

Thanks for explaining clipless! I'll look into it. I guess I don't see a point of the reflectors on the wheels. Especially since I don't ride at night, though day visibility is important, I suppose.

What's a good road bike saddle?

In The State of Forida. I ran the 2-mile in H.S. pr of 9:27. After High school I had a chance to run at a bunch of big colleges, but I had signed up for the army reserves my junior year in H.s. some delayed entry thing! I went and became a combat medic and when I returned from training I Took my EMT certificate and went and challenged the state test. then took emt-p (paramedic ) then fire academy. Got a job as a fire-medic. During that time I ran as a unattached runner, went to some big meets ran, also ran some road races. Then 1 day just gave it up. As fast as 14:58 was for 5k I could go out and challenge for the win on road races but against the big boys on the track I couldnt compete with guys running in the 13:00 and low 14:00s. sit around for 10 years and have now decided to to try to race bikes. Its so much more fun on bikes. wow. I wish I would have started in H.S.

The correct techninque for pedaling is back and fort motion (as if you are trying to scrape mud from the bottom of your shoes) which can not be achived with any other system but clipless. The traditional up and down stroke although good in some instances but it always leaves one leg (the on in the upward stroke) less effetive.

I actually would have thought that crit racing would appeal to a former 5K runner. It's a similar suffering.

My first post, a lot of very nice bikes here. Here's my Specialized Allez Epic carbon fiber. I'm the original owner. Think it may be a '93 or '94. Shimano 600 group, Deda 215 bars, Wolber T-430 rims, Vittoria Rubino Pro tires, Selle Italia Nixe saddle. Everything original except bars, tires and saddle.
Have seen no problems with separation of lugs and carbon fiber or any cracks.

im old 32. Getting into biking late. I want to be in the types of races where im going to be in the saddle for hours. Where endurance is gonna play a bigger role then trying to race a 16 yo who could care less if he wrecks everyone to win a medal. At least till i get comfortable. I just feel my strengths will be longer distance racing. When i finally do develop the right muscles and form i feel like i will have a advantage. Especially after being in the saddle for hours

What's a good road bike saddle?
the one that feels good while fully supporting your sit bones. The best saddle for one guy is rarely the best saddle for you as well.

I haven't posted in a while and I've done some stuff to my original bike so here she is again, with some brand new shoes.

'08 Trek 1.2 w/Full Rival, Tektro R538's Titans w/Forte DC Pro's installed by self with blisters to prove it.
And yesterday we brought home a new baby. My wife had the kids and my mom and dad in on the surprise. Walked away with this

GT Sport Full CF SRAM Rival all around Mavic Aksiums. I haven't had a chance to ride. Hoping it's gonna be soon.

I am new to the road bike community, but I just purchased a 2011 Specialized Allez compact double. Just put new matching tires on it to fancy her up a bit.
