Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Double Recovery Day!!

Rode 89 miles, 3823' climbing yesterday... and then went out late to celebrate a friends 50'th last night..

Slept in and spent the day recovering from the ride and the hangover..

A whopping 4.4 km. I spent a while debating whether I should even go out or not since the skies were looking rather unfriendly. I made it around the corner, felt a couple of raindrops, and decided to head back. Good call - rain and thunder started a few minutes after I got home.

another Sunday ride from the Cape. Started in Pocasset and rode over the Bourne Bridge through the fantastic back roads of Southeastern MA to Providence RI. Temperature hovered in the high 60's low 70's with an easterly tailwind! super clear blues skies and ideal winding roads with some rolling hills but compared to my Western MA rides this is flat.

the scenery could not be beat and I've really worked out some choice roads. Had dinner with family in Providence rode down to the train station and took the 8:45p commuter train back to Boston then rode home on the bike path along the Charles River on a beautiful summer night.

A total of 77 heavenly miles. Rate the day and the ride as a 9.5 on a scale of 10.

Just less than a mile, riding up and down the street on my block, pacing my son Lucas. He got his training wheels off last week and he's crazy about riding his bike! Just like his old man.

It was awesome.

Saturday: Bought some sticky back plastic from a Stationers to protect the frame from the cables, as advised by lbs, seems to work well. Attached saddle bag with spare tube and co2 after my first puncture last week left me walking home. Sunday: An easy 22 miles with my partner after too much wine on Saturday. She doesn't like getting close enough to draft me, so I told her it would be a shame to waste all her effort and followed close behind for much of the ride.

76-mile group ride (just 3 of us) that ended with a puncture and more hurt to my cracked ribs (had a nasty fall a couple of weeks back). Fairly fast ride (20mph) until 20-miles to go which is about the time my ribs started aching and I got the flat. Spent the rest of the ride at recovery pace - nursing the ol' ribcage.

The weather has been horrible, the whole area has been like a damp j-cloth for the last 4 days. But yesterday at about 6:00 pm, the clouds cleared and the sun snuck out. Perfect weather for a ride, so it was an absoluate must to go for a quick 30 km loop on the secondary highways.
It was great to see the sunshine glittering on the pothole lakes.
Got home for a nice cold beer, and just in time to watch the clouds move in again.

A bit over 80 miles, a bit over 11,000 vertical feet in a BikeForums group ride. Why do we do this to ourselves? Ride reports here.

sunday ride around concord, mass

did a loop from cambridge mass up to concord mass and around lincoln.
just 32 miles at a moderate pace, but a perfect ride, since i'm just getting back into it.
i finally realized my chronic sinus problems wouldn't get better on their own, and that exercise actually helps.
oh my god i love my road bike.

let's see, one thing i'm happy about...
my huge recovery breakfast this morning.
french toast, bacon, cherries, ah....

On Sunday, at about 6:05am, I got on my bike in Brattleboro, VT and rode to Hanscom AFB in Bedford MA to finish a 600k that we started at 12:01pm on an early Saturday morning. 385 miles, 20,000 ft. of climbing and a whole lot of fun memories in between.

best thing about finishing the ride though is that I'm now qualified for Paris-Brest-Paris.

I rode to the start of my club's Plymouth to P-town ride with a few guys, joined the group (around 50 riders) for about 40 miles, left them at a rest stop in Dennis and rode back home. 108 miles.

Saturday was 106 miles, so I took it easy on Sunday and just rode 100 miles.

Saturday TOMRV route Bettendorf, IA to Dubuque, IA via the Illinois side:

Sunday was 100 miles with the century option (which was a lonely option by the way)

That sounds lovely. I'm jealous.

Say, what's with the italics on "easterly?" Doesn't the Atlantic coast get lots of easterly winds? (asks the landlocked kid from the Great Lakes region)

I rode 101.47 miles, doing the Tour de Cure out of Reston, VA. My time on the bike was 5:59:06, with a total time about 6 hours and 40 minutes. The weather was about as good as you could hope for this time of year. The ride was well organized, with good support at the rest stops and ample markings along the way to prevent you from getting lost. I found that I didn't even have to look at my cue sheet. When the ride was over they had some people from a massage school giving out free massages, plus there was a band and some good sandwiches. All in all it was a good ride. However, at the end I was tired and ready to be finished.

Sunday Ride

Took my beautiful new Specialized Roubaix on her maiden voyage. Did 40 miles around the old hometown next to Galveston Bay. A little hot and muggy (Texas in June...DUH!) but a wonderful ride on an awesome machine! Can't wait till next weekend!

Been riding for 2 months now.... I get out 3 or more times a week.
Sunday I went on my longets ride to date 30.35 miles. The ride took 1 hr 53.5xxx with an ave speed of 16.4mph.
I was repeatedlly humbled by every form of rider that was quicker than i was... An old man(60+yrs) left me for dead. A big fat guy (300lbs or damn near) with his bibs over the top of his t-shirt :0, dropped me like a bad habbit. A couple college girls, and some young kids( late teens), all left me behind as they giggled and laughed at my lack of ability.
I followed Sundays ride with 30 more miles on monday morning, this time it only took 1hr 42.XXXmin.
over the same route.

oh I had a nice ride Sunday the 7th Annual Los Angeles River Ride...;o)
Me and 12 guys and about 2000 people I'd never met before all rode from Griffith Park to Long Beach and back...or some variation involving trains or turning around part way. The weather was perfect...
