Can anyone ID what year this 404 is from?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You're right. If it has "USA" laser-etched on the middle portion of the hub body it is from late 2001 and the freehub body is not interchangable with the earlier 102/282 hubs, which were Swiss-made. If you're looking at a set, the rear US-made hubs had 3-pawl ratcheting mechanisms and parts are readily available; the supply of parts for the Swiss-made hubs is dwindling.
