Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I see now that instead of buying bibs and jerseys I need to buy Rogaine (to make my legs hearier) and take off the newly installed Keos and go back to platforms. Then just train like mad using some heavy fixie + add 2 watter bottles filled with pennies and a sadle bag with some bricks in it.

In a few months I'll show up at the group ride with my super heary legs and smoke everyone on my fixie with platforms on it.

Really? This is a minor inconvenience at beast. If you really want to move here I wouldn't make this a reason not too.

So you got all bent out of shape because a group of riders announced that they were passing?

I'll say it again, with emphasis:

Yeah, many seem to have missed the part that you now emphasized.

If I have my head turned back and looking at you I obviously see you...

I think you are right. It was the perception of the person who made the comment. Her perception of her own insecurity I guess. The insecurity of not being able to pass me like the other 20 people did before without saying anything. Well put.

I wondered why the other 20 people that passed me did not say anything...they just passed

If they want to school me with some BS I'll point out the fact that: a)they are insecure or b) they want to be the ones who school the new people.

I don't know man...maybe all this stuff is just in my head and I'm too sensitive. Come to think of it its really unheard of for regular riders to treat new people like dirt. It must be me.

I'll paraphrase myself again. I would expect the other riders (or anyone who is watching) to be able to establish if you are a really new rider and can't hold a line and a are a danger to the group within 50-100 yards. Once you've established that you may want to act accordingly and give the ammount of respect the new riders skills deserve. If he is horrible you can say wahatever to him but if he is decent and can hold a line and he is not cutting people off and overlapping wheels then give his some credit and don't treat him like an idiot.

Clearly I'm not the only one who sees this. I heard subtle comments from some people in the group to the fact that they are not really gaining new members for the ride due to the overall attitude towards new people.

It used to be that you legs and riding skills made you...now it's the clothes and carbon and shaved legs...I belive they have a word for that...

Like all them drivers who are looking right at me (more like through me) see me? I don't assume nothing on a bike...from cars or cyclists.

So let's say you are right. Can I then make my decision based on the fact that 20 riders said nothing and 1 person said something?

Nope I sure don't...but then again it's all relative...it's obvious I'm new so the fact that I can hold a line should be worth something (oh yeah then there is that whole 54 mile ride in well 3 hours and 40 minutes my first time out and still not feeling any pain and going out the next day for a 24 mile ride).

Judging from a lot of BF members who have replied I seem to have something going for me to ride 54 miles in running shorts and flat platform pedals

I'll say it again...I doubt 5 riders out of the 40 on Saturday would ride the 54 miles with running shorts and flat platforms. They might be faster but I'm tougher

Then again there is riding and then there is *riding* I honestly can't rember seeing any of these riders drop the heel so it was parallel with the ground or even a bit beyond parallel on Zone 1 at 3 o'clock on the pedal stroke....and I watched them....

Yeah, but cycling isn't exactly rocket surgery. Pedal. Hold your line. Maintain your speed. Don't be a tossbag. And stay alert-ish. That's pretty much it.

Some people are able to ride fifty miles in a fairly straight line without having to train for years.

Hello,

I've had similar experiences with snobby, immature boneheads, but while bike touring. Although I tour alone, I always bump into other touring cyclists along the way.

When I encounter them, I always remember this: "Rudeness is just a weak person's imitation of strength."

Some roadies as well look down on me because my touring bike is heavy and I'm relatively slow--definitely slow. What they don't know is that I rode more than 2200 miles in a single tour.

So the whole issue you had when you posted the OP was that those other riders lack humility, right?

I would just remind you of that at this point...

Some of those carbon fiber/shaved leg boys are pretty fast too, and could smoke your azz any day of the week and twice on sunday. There's ALWAYS someone who's going to be faster than you and tougher than you, and it has nothing to do with the bike they ride.

I mean, really, the people making jokes want to believe that they're better than you because of their bikes. You want to believe that you're better than them because you're tough and don't need all that fancy stuff.

Just for some perspective, 54 miles in 4 hours is not particularly fast by the standards of most of the guys I ride with, shaved legs and all. I've gotten dropped like a hot rock on group rides when my average speed was 22mph. Find the right group of carbon fiber leg shavers and I assure you your humility will be restored. They'll be long gone before they even have a chance to care what you're riding/wearing.
