Shoe break in & stretch..

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shoe break in & stretch..

Quick question, and one which I'll supply a commonsense answer to.

But do road and MTB shoes stretch out and break in like a normal pair of leather or mesh trainers or shoes? I've had to order a few different pairs online, and in trying some on I've noticed that in general the width leaves a little to be desired. That being said, I'm used to that, and I don't typically find a problem once they're broken in (and XXL shoe trees do wonders when left in for a few days).

Specifically, tried on a pair of Shimano M121G's and I liked the feel, just could use a bit more width. So if I know they're not going to stretch like I'm hoping, they're going back.

The delivery man is also supposed to show up today w/ a pair of Izumi X-Alp Low Trianer/MTB shoes (link1 & link2) which I'm quite excited about, simply because I think they'll have a slightly more relaxed toe box due to the material.

And, as a side note and to avoid any comments about "you should go and try them on instead of order online", I wear a 47/48 so going to LBS to try shoes on is something of a joke. 90% of the time they don't have my size in the style I want.

Appreciate any feedback on this, thanks.
