What American to root for?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What American to root for?

I am soliciting nominations for my favorite American cyclist (and every American should have one). The only qualification is that they be a road racer with some level of international accomplishment. Past or present riders eligible (and maybe even one of each would be appropriate).

Once upon a time it was Lemond -- I spent my childhood learning to love bikes while he was winning Tours. But now, I must confess, he does seem a bit too eager to tear down other American cyclists, and sounds damn whiny in doing so.

I never took to Lance. Rooting for him was like rooting for the Yankees (which, unless you live/lived in New York, is truly senseless). Plus, I do have an ear for the argument that dominating one race and doing squat in all the others is, at least, a different sort of pursuit than the past greats -- Merckx, Hinault -- had.

I was all ready to jump on Landis' bandwagon last year. But even if he's getting screwed, the AAF and the manager's call to LeMond leave me feeling dirty. Indeed, that whole event soured my on both Landis and LeMond.

So I'm left twisting in the wind. Leaders in the clubhouse for my future undying support are: (1) past, Hampsten; (2) present, Zabriskie. But I'm open to suggestion . . .

Not LBL, but Paris-Roubaix.

Dave Z's a local and it's also fun to root for him because you never know what weird thing is going to happen to him next. He's either getting stranded with flat tires or breaking chains and falling off his bike. Kind of like a pro version of The Cypress but without the thunder thighs and makeup.

Fausto Coppi!!!

If American can mean avoiding Habeas Corpus in Cuba, Nation Building in Iraq (Democracy? OIL!) Suspending search warrants for your own good by our own Government. (What are you trying to hide?)

Than Coppi can be my favorite American rider.

I'm kinda partial to rooting for the guys racing the protour who are no name domestiques. Christian Vanvelde, Tylar Farrar, Aaron Olson to name a couple. It would be amazing for one of these guys to get a quality pro tour win.

All of those points you make are both good and bad for our country, but have you been to italy? so many more problems and such a bleak future, America is still a truly great country despite the last few years.

I think Levi Leipheimer may be the best hope for America this year.

America is a great country, even though we don't extend rights to terrorists caught on the battlefield and even if we liberate countries from thugs like Saddam Hussein. Not sure about the search warrants - eavesdropping on international phone calls has been going on a long time and I don't recall that a warrant was ever needed. But whatever, maybe next time 3000 Americans are killed by terrorists we should just cower in a corner somewhere and they'll leave us alone.

I love it when the domestiques get a stage win. They go on a wild breakaway, the yellow jersey squad couldn't care less, the peloton can't get its act together until it's too late, and the escapees battle it out for the win. Being a domestique is like being an offensive lineman in football, nobody notices you unless you get called for a penalty but ask the quarterback and running backs who the most important teammates are.

I want Levi Leipheimer to win GC. I think the Tour will be a lot cleaner this year and so teams won't have unlimited energy with which to defend the yellow jersey. I think it'll change hands a few times but it will still be decided by somebody that can be strong in the mountains and have good time trials. I think Levi is the one; his time trialing this year has been awesome.

And I'm a diehard Disco fan. I want Popovych and Contador to kick some butt, maybe Brajkovic can shine. It's time for Tommy D. to put up or get out.

But hey, a win by anybody else will still be good.
