Broken Look Cleats

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Broken Look Cleats

you know how they say everyone falls at some point with their clipless pedals.... I've been riding on them for about a year and only fell for the first time yesterday. fortuantely I fell onto grass so was unhurt and it was quite funny.

Later on on the way home, coming off from a traffic light i was pulling up and my foot popped out on that side. I got home and this is what i discovered;

the cleat on the left is what it should look like, the one on the right is missing a chunk of plastic and is cracked.

This must have happened when i fell and my foot was yanked out of the pedal.

damn. so i'll be getting some new cleats.
I havent been that impressed with them generally, they sometimes work loose from the shoe and i have to stop and screw them back in....

you probably had the issues because your cleats were well past their sell by date.

keep 'em fresh for safety's sake.

oh, and use some lock-tight with the new ones.

*edit*

is this just a weird angle, or is there a noticeable difference in fore/aft placement of your cleats?

Happened to my Keo cleat during a clipless fall. Glad it was my cleat that snapped and not my ankle.

Read about it here.

spd-sl pedals are an even better investment.

Yes, those cleats are beyond worn-out, which probably explains both the fall and the breakage. This is why they sell replacement cleats.

Same thing happened to me, on NEW cleats. Gee, maybe plastic is not the best material for this application?

This is better than the time the French convinced Americans to buy bottled water.

I just got the grey cleats and I feel like the 4.5 degree float is way too much. I'm thinking about getting the 0 blacks. Do you feel yours have too much float.

A bit off topic, but I like the 4.5 float. I've used 9 degree float on old Arc/Deltas, but that felt like I was skating all over the place. Zero float seems like it would be too constricting for me.

I'll work with the grays for a while. No to me they seem like they are skating big time. I had to check the screws to make sure they were still tight on the cleats (they were). That's how bad they float. I'm running Keo Classics by the way.

My Keo's wore out too fast, my friend's are completely trashed in 4 months of riding and not very much walking in them. They fell apart.

If this set of cleats wear just as fast then I'll switch to Speedplay's and see how they work.

Yeah the LOOKS seem to vanish even if you just barely walk on them.

I have some LOOK red cleats (the older Delta system which won't work with Keo pedals) and they were wearing down at a crazy pace.

I'm putting in an order for so new Keo cleats with covers. Hopefully the covers will help.

I think the gray ones feel pretty tight compared to the red. Have you tried playing with the pedal tension?

While I have grown to love the way my Keos feel when on the bike, the quick wear on the cleats is a major drawback. Remembering to put the covers on and carrying them around can be a hassle.

Out of shear pessimism, I usually keep my covers in a back pocket when I ride. It would be nice not to worry about that.

Perhaps some Shimanos at some point in the future will be in order.

I've messed around with the tension a few times but I will give it another shot.

I was a bit leery of the Looks when I saw some of the Keo experiences posted here - but what I found was that if I overtightened the screw holding the cleat on, the cleat cracked. Looks like the red cleat up top, and probably like the grey one below. It cracked (on my Sidi) between the single bolt and the two in back. I had to toss the cleat but it was worth it to learn what happened.

Also, when I hop off the bike quick, the cleat takes a bit hit. I'm careful when I hop off the bike.

The cleat could be made a little more flexible but that's my only complaint. I've had no problems so far with the Keos.

I have the covers, use them as often as is feasible. They wear out just from the normal stopping and starting. It's frustrating. I've been lucky that my cleat hasn't popped out yet, but it's getting to that point. I also lost one screw on my Century ride 2 weeks ago and I used Lok-tite to hold them all in! It makes sense why my leg was starting to hurt now.

I also had the old Delta pedals and those cleats seemed to wear as well, but not nearly as fast as the Keo's.

They are rubber molded covers for the cleat so you can walk around without grinding and wearing down the cleat on the pavement:

Be careful if you have the Delta cleats - the standard covers don't work with them. I have been unable to find covers that do.

I have Keo Classics...the Deltas won't work on the Keo...Look went to a new design and abandoned Delta...

I do have both red and black (new) Deltas from when I had the Wellgo Look-style pedals...I'll probably give away the black cleats for free (the reds are kind of toasted) since they are of no use to me.
