How do you price a used road bike for sale?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd like to upgrade but first I must sell off my current bike. How do I price it fairly? Is there a KBB for bikes?

Go to ebay, do an advanced search and check the completed items only box. If you do that, check craigslist and asking here you should get a good idea.

Hey - this thread could be helpful for some of us. I'm going to be selling a 96 Trek 2300 Composite with full Shimano 600 / brifters / 8x2, brand new Ksyrium Elites, Selle Italia SLR in very good condition except for a scratch on the top tube. Any thoughts?

I have a 2004 Norava Trionfo from REI. It has a full Ultegra kit, Shimano WH-R540 wheels, Terry Fly seat. The seat only has about 100 miles on it and the bike has less than 1500 miles. Just bought a Michelin Pro Race 2 tire for the rear. The front is Vittoria something or other.

What would you say I can sell the bike for?

Not my experience. Post here and you get dicked around by guys who aren't serious and low-ball by 30%.

In my experience, tires give nothing to the value, FYI. I have no knowledge of the frame, so I won't guess on price.

yeah here is not a good place, "i can get that for $15 of craigslist/thriftshop, I saw two the other day in the dumpster..." "you can get it brand new from ____ for $XX more.." it gets a bit tiring and is for the most part unrealistic. This is the internet afterall though...

I'd tell people I sell bikes to about bikeforums and that it's a good place to ask questions and learn except I don't want them posting the fair price they happily paid only to have the thread degenerate into them getting ripped off and they should take it back, I'm a crook etc..

I always check a few completed auctions then average them, I'll also add a portion of ridiculous shipping costs, say for example. $120 s/h I'll add $80 to the price since shipping shouldn't be over $40 and hopefully bidders are smart enough to do the same.

If you want to sell something, price it at the point where you would think you were getting a good deal if you were trying to buy it. If you worry too much about not getting top dollar, you are not going to sell it.
