Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ugh, I did something stupid yesterday...

I was cleaning my bike (the Lemond) and I didn't put the skewer on tight enough apparently. I was taking off from a standstill and was really torquing on the cranks when the rear wheel popped loose (older style rear dropouts). I went down pretty hard on the pavement, hitting my right knee, elbow and hand. Got some nice road rash but nothing worse thankfully.

I did scrape up my frame a bit though... The rear wheel is bent to hell because it hit the inside of the chain stay and the cassette gouged the hell out of the chain stay as well. I feel so stupid...

Anyway, make sure your wheels are on tight. You'd think I'd know this as many miles as I've ridden and as many times as I've had the wheels off my bikes. Have I mentioned how stupid I feel?

Glad you're mostly OK.

I am glad you were not injured worse.

I used to have problems with a slipping rear wheel with horizontal dropouts. Sometimes tight isn't the issue. I used to crank down the skewer to the point I thought I would do damage to it or the hub bearings and it still would slip. I bought a Shimano replacement skewer and that fixed the problem. The cam is better and the nuts have those serrations that had mostly worn of the old skewer.

The skewers are fine. They are Campy Record and the serrations are very sharp. I just don't think I had it tight enough. When it let go it was explosive. You should see the rear wheel. It's a mess...

I wouldn't advertise this. Pretty soon the good folks in Sacramento will be considering legislation to outlaw quick release wheels.

Seriously, glad you're ok. It'll serve as a reminder for all of us...
