Here are good analogies: Are any of the following more expensive items really over 150% better? No. But people still pay more. custom made Brioni suite for $5500 vs. an off-the-rack Armani for $2100 Krell DVD player for $5000 vs. Pioneer Elite DVD player for $1500 Runco flatscreen plasma tv for $20,000 vs. Fujitsu flatscreen for $9,000 stainless steel Rolex for $3,000 vs. stainless steel Seiko for $500 For some people, that extra ounce of performance/comfort is worth the additional $3000 because that's how they value things in their lives. I HATE Performance jerseys and shorts, not because I'm a brand snob, but because the materials they use itch the hell out of me. But baselayers by Craft and Assos are the bomb in comfort and fit. I wear $70 bibs from aerotechdesigns.com because they are actually comfortable, but I also wear Assos bibs because I appreciate the noticeable improvement in comfort on 50+ mile rides. |
Descent and Pearl Izumi are the most I'll spend and the quality and technical materials are great.
Anything less in my opinion, is shabby in quality, fit, stiching, panels, etc. Law of diminishing returns applies here. |

Here's the link for that Castelli jersey. It's relatively inexpensive, but it seems like it wouldn't be too durable. Apparently, the reason the material is so light is because it's got a hollow core.....you may throw it in the washing machine, and when you open it up to get your clothes out, there's only dust. |
I've looked over the Assos stuff and I'm perfectly satisfied with Nalini and Santini jerseys which I seem to be able to find for under $40 on a regular basis. It took me a couple tries to figure-out the sizes but now I have it wired. Some of the Castelli stuff is nice but I don't like the fabric in their lower end lines. Pearl Izumi jerseys make my Garmin 305 HR monitor ****-out. I think the Rapha stuff is far more ridiculous than Assos.

rapha is stuck in some luddite-pie-in-the-sky-the-best-days-when-men-were-men-are-behind-us-so-lets-commemorate-it-with-kit nonsense. |
any pictures. what makes assos so pricey. We have a club kit with Surgoi name from some local outlet , bibs and jersey for 97 dollars. It's all just lycra. Because its over 25 orders we get some kind of discount tho.

years ago I bought some Assos shorts on sale. They were comfortable. But the price of shorts and jersey might come to 500 bucks ? Can almost buy a suit for that price. I just don't see that much extra comfort to say Pearl Izumi for half the price. I'd rather put the money into the bike.

I have a Rapha jersey and it is hands-down the nicest jersey I have ever worn. It was a gift, and cost $195. That's a lot of scratch, but not when you consider that I'd rather have one Rapha jersey than three inferior jerseys at $65 a pop, or two average team commemorative jerseys at $95 a pop (or more). The fabric, cut, design and craftsmanship of Rapha jerseys are extraordinary. And if they are made in China, that rather indicates that the Chinese are damn good at making high-end cycling wear.
FWIW, I wear Assos F1 Uno bib shorts, and they are awesome, too - cost $160 I think. Worth every penny. I've stopped searching for the perfect pair of cycling shorts; Assos makes them. |
Finally, someone jumps into this thread to defend Rapha... I've been waiting 2.5 years!!!

whatever the market will bear.
