Bike thief caught at bike shop
I was hanging out at a local bike shop yesterday, and the owner sees a guy pushing a bike with a flat tire down the sidewalk outside. He thinks the bike looks familiar, so he goes out to talk to the guy and get a better look. He offers to fix the guy's flat for nothing, and gets the bike inside to check the serial number. Yup, it's a customer's stolen bike allright. So he calls the cops.
Cops come and the guy actually starts a fight with the cop. He is eventually cuffed and tossed into the patrol car. Methinks assaulting a copper is a lot worse than stealing a bike. The bike was worth $660 so he will at least face grand larceny charges as well.
Very entertaining. Much better than watching COPS. Nice to see a little bike thief justice too.

Definitely good that someone cares. The police sure don't...
There's a website that's geared toward local racers here in the DC area, and the author of the site started a bike registry, so that if a bike is stolen the info can be posted and local racers will see it. Kind of a nice thing...
I'm guessing that starting the fight with the cop didn't do much for his claims of innocence.

Yeah, the 'I bought it from a guy' line probably would've had him off scott free.
At least the good guys won one.

Man, I wish our bike thief was that stupid (although I believe he actually is). Our shop got broken into Thursday and a kid got away with a bmx bike worth $660 (hmmmm).
We have all the local kids rounding up suspects but still haven't recovered the bike yet.

Update. The thief was back out walking down the same street the next day. The cops just let him go.
The only good news is that one guy got his bike back.

That's why I write my name and mobile # in English and Spanish on the rim tape of my wheels. I figure if they suspect anything when I bring it in they'll ring the number, and then everyone gets to experience my lovely DOOM ringtone.

while not all bike shop employees/owners may be as savvy as the one in the OP it's certainly a point in favor of certain "services" offered by an LBS that is not offered elsewhere. This is a good thread to reference when people start complaining about the prices paid at an LBS as opposed to other outlets.

Even if the bike-theft charges don't stick, seems like the obstruction/resisting arrest charges are valid.
