I ran them as daily commuters for some time. You really have to keep an eye out for glass and get it out of the tire fast otherwise=flat.
They cut up pretty easily.
They pick up a lot more glass in the wet as well.
If you ride some place where glass is not a problem, they would be fine.

They're racing tires, and pretty durable as racing tires go, but if you're looking for bomb-proof flat protection with a great ride, just go for a pair of Michelin Krylion Carbons and be done with it.

By the way, anyone considering GP 4000, get the newer GP 4000 S instead - feels much better and lower rolling resistance.

I would say that GP 4000's are the best race tire going for long road races in the flats, where weight is not as much of an issue, but flatting out is a concern. For shorter races such as crits and for time trials/hill climbs, there are better tires (Michelin Pro 2 Lights or Vittoria Open Tubulars).
For training, who cares about weight. What you want is to put in tons of miles, uninterrupted by changing a tube. As such, get the Gatorskins.

I've ridden the Krylion Carbons and thought they were pretty harsh riding. Ended up switching them out. They were beating the crap out of me.
I am currently using Pro2 Race and have found them to be better than the 4000's in terms of cutting up and collecting glass. They are very comfortable and fast too.

I have been running gp4000 for the last 3000 miles after pulling off the Krylion Carbons. The pg4000's feel much better than the krylions. I just moved back to the city for school for a year and a half and I will be running the krylions when i wear out the gp400's though, because they just arent as durable. For a race tire, I have been very impressed with them. 1 flat over 3000 miles when I picked up a metal chip that went all the way through. A few small cuts, but nothing else major.

On my lowracer I run the gp4000 on the rear and in 4000 miles on the tire, never got a flat. I run the equivalent tire on the front, but it is called a sport contact and is a 20" 406 erto size. I believe I got 3000 miles out of that tire with no flats. It is a very comfy tire. I can't comment on speed differences between different tires. Any tire I put on the lowracer seem fast.

I have almost 4000 miles on a pair of GP4000's (on fairly rough country roads) and no flats yet. I have a new pair in my closet but I can't wear out this pair. I love them.
