Anyone had this problem with rim plugs?...
So I installed rim plugs, and now my tire bead doesn't have enough room to seat in the area directly above the tubes valve...
This seems to be exactly the opposite of what should be happening... rim plugs = lower seating of the tube than rim strips = more room for the tire bead to seat... above the valve or otherwise. What the f*ck is going on?! |
The problem is you are using rim plugs.
|
Try using butt plugs instead.
|
You two should get a room and explore those ideas in private.
Rim pugs are dope, I've never had this problem before... |

Excellent way to shave 30-40g off your wheels. They're little plastic tabs that snap into your spoke holes... they replace rim strips. Two wheel's worth generally weigh 4 to 8g, depending on your spoke count... |
Check and see if you can use the next size down tire tube. Some times the flap of the stem base keeps the tire from seating.
Avoid using the previous suggested"butt plug" or you,ll always have trouble seating. "Woody Hayes just smacked you for that one" |

you're kidding, right?
Of course the tire won't seat...the damned plug is huge. Don't fix what ain't broke. |
Doc, are you kiding me? In a world of weight weenies, 30g (per wheel?) is significant! Although if you're really a weight weenie you're probably running tubulars thus negating the need for tube protection

A bag of 100 costs the same as two strips, and unlike strips which stretch after being transferred a few times, rim plugs may be used again and again. On top of all this, they're significantly lighter. What's not to like? Rim plugs have worked on numerous other wheelsets for me, I've never had this problem before... |

No need to be nasty, mate. You can't mount them on these ones, I note.

Yeah, I can't figure out what the problem is... I've heard people have had this seating problem with this tire after a few hundred miles (Vredestein SL), so maybe that's it and I'm only noticing it now... but then if that's the case, it's odd that it's in exactly the same place on both tires... |
Have you tried pushing the valve into the tire to create more clearance?

And +1 for pushing the tube into the tire. The valve area is always the hardest place to get seated, so I always seat that first. |

I used rim plugs for a short extent. I kept losing tire pressure. I chcecked the tire, the tube, and the rim to see if any debris would be the cause. After searching and searching, nothing came up. Finally I removed all my rim plugs, used two strips of electrical tape and my problem was gone. Needless to say, I think rim plugs useless.

So, when you install rim plugs, are you giving your wheels a rim job?
|
It looks like you could drill a hole in the center each rim plug, and chamfer the edge. The whole plug could be filed down 1/2 mm or so and a good portion of the tabs filed off. That way you could save another 10 - 12 grams and it would only take about 15 hour of labor.
