Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Record Speed Down a Steep As @#$# hill.

Today I rode and whent to the new hill I found on fridays century ride. I find lots of new hills on group rides. This hill is steep which I love. I hit 50.1 mph easy going down it. First time down I checked to see how tight the turn is at high speed. It was ok so I climbed back up it and came down in the drops. There were a few bumbs but felt ok. I love this new hill. I ride up it in a 39x25. I need to get pictures it is amazing hill.

Yeah, I hate bumbs on downhills.

Pictures? How about video of your form climbing the hills so we can analyze it and help you win the TDF.

Now that I'd like to see.

haha congrats! I just did hill intervals with a friend today. One of the hills was an 18% grade and coming down was amazing. We both bit 49.6mph but easily could have gone faster with a better analysis of the turns. It was only a two lane road with not much traffic but some pretty tight turns so we made sure to slow down to about 40mph. By the way, 50mph felt fast as hell on a narrow road but oh so sweet!

I hit 51 like 2 years ago when I really wasn't in shape (compared to my current state) and now my highest since then is like 48 or 49, however, the later record was solo riding, where the other was with a buddy and we would take turns drafting off the other guy and doing quick pulls that way.

I had pretty much the same story until this year's Horribly Hilly Hundreds ride. I coasted past 50 multiple times during that ride.

It's good to be fat on the downhill sections.

I've hit 56 MPH before. Within 1/3 mile of the top of the mountain. I think I need to use my aero wheelset and ballast myself a bit (perhaps top off all my water bottles with rocks before descending) if I want to go much faster.

we have a lunch time ride up a local mountian, last year I hit 50 on the way down with a steel bike. co-workers recently hit 50.8 and 50.2. last week I hit 52 on a kestrel. this week, it might try it with an aero front wheel.

Got to just over 48 down a twisty road the other day. Couldn't go faster because of a car in front of me and there wasn't anywhere safe to pass; too many blind turns and too much traffic. Not to mention the car in front of me had some apparent difficulty staying on their side of the road and off the shoulders.

35 is just the beginning once you breach 40 and approach 50 your whole perspective on speed in the 30s changes completely. I learned that on day 1

I hit 36.8 last Friday, on a short (but fairly steep) hill. Had a nice tight S curve at the bottom too. I was pretty proud of myself, until I found this thread.

Seriously though, I've been riding MTB's for the last 10 years. 36 MPH felt fast.

I'm still looking for the 60 mph mark on my computer, just want to hit it once. So far my high is 58.7 mph. Close but not quite there.

being a motorcycleist with an older bike (73 cb350f) with no windscreen, the forces increase dramaticly every little increase of speed after you get past 50. At 50mph, its not too bad, 60, it starts getting a little rough, at 70-80mph, the wind is so strong, your using your whole body to stay planted on the bike as the wind feels like a pack of linebackers pushing on you.

I just put my speed sensor on the rear wheel and anytime that I want to see a high number all I have to do is put the bike on a stand and spin it up. At 50 mph the road rash should be impressive.

You've got a tri bike. "Fast downhill" should not be part of your vocabulary.

Rad, In the 90's I hit 50-60 so many times I can't count, even hitting 50+ in Eugene coming down South Willamette, But my fastest trip downhill was on the Sisters side of the McKenzie pass where I was able to inch up to 72 mph in a full on, chin on the handlebars, knees tucked in the frame, screaming downhill. Since then I am like you somewhere around 44-45 is now my max. I guess I might be getting smarter in my old age.

Just looking out for your best interest there.

Fast on the flats = Go for it (just not when riding with others)....
