Road cycling is a beautiful sport?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why is road cycling considered by many to be a beautiful sport?

The blur of color, shapes, and human form of the peleton, and the many designs and shapes of the peleton as it winds its way across the landscape?

pezcycling.com's distraction page??

Pick one.

It's the suffering. Suffering is beautiful.

From page 118 of Matt Rendell's book "A Significant Other"...

Victor Hugo Pena:

"When I first came to Europe, I saw people coloured their hair and wore earrings. But when I coloured my hair and had my ear pierced, my director sportif at Vitalicio, Javier Minguez, told me,'If you want to fix your hair like a queer, go and play soccer. Cycling is for men. You go through misery. You ride so hard you dribble, you $h!t yourself, you fall on your face and bleed, but you carry on. In cycling you earn your money going through he!!. Why don't you learn to play football where you kick the ball around for an hour or so and earn millions?'"

Sort of a nice summarization...

Soccer is also considered a beautiful sport or a beautiful game in this case.

Other sports like rugby, tennis, basketball is not.

I wonder if its because there is no contact in cycling. Men don't fight each other out. Soccer has a bit of that as well while tennis dosen't. So being beautiful is more than that. Its also got to do with the sport can be clearly seen? A tennis ball is small so its hard for the spectator to follow the ball. A soccer ball is larger and its clear what is going on from the TV at least. The moves are fluent and can be easily followed and watched. Cycling also can be easily followed from the TV and watch them suffer.

I find road bikes to be beautiful, espcially the time trial bikes. Also I have to admit the pro cyclist's legs with all that muscle tone has a good shape, more pleasant than a marathoner's legs at least. I wonder if the latter two points add to the beauty of the sport.

Also is the fact that road cycling has a lot of strategy in it including guessing what the other cyclists might do and planning ahead just like chess. It involves team work as well.

Because its a mixture of speed, grace, brutality and suffering, Becuase men suffer and sacrifice their chances and sacrifice themselves....so that another man can win. And it all plays out in some of the most difficult arenas in the world has to offer..

Cycling, like track, horse, and auto racing, is pure sport. The first one to the finish wins. Baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, hockey, lacrosse, and basketball are games.

Not to nit pick here, but... Cycling, track, horse, auto, etc are just racing sports. Anything competitive requiring any sort of degree of physical activity can be considered a sport. There's just as much strategy in cycling as there is in football or hockey or soccer, etc... it's just applied differently. Suffering and sacrifice are what I like about the sport of cycling.

I think it is the suffering and the determination that makes cycling a beautiful sport. Oh and the heart. You need a lot of heart to do well in this sport. That is what makes it beautiful to me.
