Durable road tires - Suggestions ?
 

Any suggestions for durable road tires for my road bike ? Thinking of commuting to work by bicycle for a couple days a week. 50 km each way (100 km round trip). Need something fast and long lasting.

You're going to blow through any tire commuting 100km each way. Just buy some cheapie conti ultrasports. $25 for a pair.

Specialized makes a series of armored tires that last a long time as well. The Armadillo series. www.specialized.com

The oly drawback to them is they are heavy. I use them. No flats in 250 miles so far.

I've been happy with Panaracer Pasela TourGuard. Kevlar belt, very flat-resistant.

I recently (350 miles ago), switched to Conti GatorSkins. No flats so far, when I used to get them every other day it seemed.

Michelin Krylion Carbons would likely work well for you.

I use my road bike for commuting on days that it's not going to be raining and such...50 miles RT on Conti Ultra Gatorskins. Over 1000 miles on the current set, no flats yet.

I use the same tyres on a hybrid on the glass strewn streets of London and have had no problems. When do the same commute on my road bike (Bontrager Race Lites) I get a ton of punctures (no surprises there).

I've got 2000 miles on a pair of Michelin PR2s, with only one flat on the rear.

I rode the hell out of a pair of Bontrager Race Lite Hardcases. Didn't even show any wear. If you can, get the 28mm size. The 25's ride pretty rough.

+1 on Conti Gatorskins. I think they're more puncture resistant than the tires on my car. (2 nails in 2 weeks- someone is out to get me)

I've got 2000+ miles on my Specialized Armadillos and they only flatted once.

Those are real expensive commuting tires.

If durability is your chief criteria, a lot of riders swear by the Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I've had great luck with the "Panaracer T-Serv for Messenger Tour Guard", which are Kevlar (Aramid) belted, and are a great ride/tread pattern in addition to being very durable. I think they're pretty comparable to the Panaracer Pasela TourGuard recommended in an earlier post.

Help me out on the chart, please.

The higher the crr the higher the wattage number. Does that mean that the GP3000 requires a lot more wattage to maintain the 18+mph speed in the test?

I wonder how GP4000's compare?
