General questions from a newb
i have a couple of questions about road biking in general, first i just got really into riding and have been extending my ride distances often. i have a cheap make of road bike that my parents bought me this christmas and its not made for the kind of punishment im dishing out. i have been looking around for a while at local dealers and came up with alot of scott, trek, and a couple of other brands, also how trek and scott compare as far as performance goes, i was wanting to know how much cheaper should last years model be compared to this years model. also i was wondering what a reasonable time was for about a 40 mile ride was and how quickly i should progress in distance.

Posts like this bring out the Road Nazi in me. I am forced to recuse myself from this case.

For you, the best way to find out is to time yourself. Use a watch.

End of the year is good time to buy because your local bike shop will want to lower inventory to stock next years models. There's also the under 700? road bike thread.
Riding speed depends on lots of different stuff. I think when I first started my averages were like 16 mph on the flats! That increases over time if you're consistent.
I've read you should only increase your distance by 10% weekly. Test that out, you may find that's too gradual.

All brands are pretty much the same at similar price points. Test ride as many as you can and get the one that fits you, and your budget, the best. Performance is a function of the engine...you. Time and progress depends upon what your goals are.
