Weight difference between different aluminum frames

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weight difference between different aluminum frames

Whats the weight difference between the aluminum frame of.. let's say a baseline allez triple and an allez comp?

Are there weight differences between the frames? or are the only things making the higher end bikes more expensive the components?

check out weight weenies for different frames. often times the actual weight is somewhat different from the advertised weight. but, yeah, alu frames can vary by a few hundred grams depending on make\model.

There are even differences in the sizes on particular models. So if you get a quoted weight for a particular frame- Is it the small-the medium or the large frame.

Quoted weight for my new frame is on a 56cm and I ride a 51. And on My Giant- The quoted weight is 18 lbs so why is my bike up in the 19's? Obviously they weighed the smallest bike in the range.

Bike manufacturers will try to Advertise their bikes at a low weight, but they are not the only ones. I was recently looking for wheels and found a table that had the manufacturers quoted wheel weight and the Actual weight listed. The actual weight on some of them was as much as 10% up on quoted. So the manufacturers wheel with a quoted weight of 1500 grammes- could be 1650. For a weight weanie- that is a lot.

hm interesting.

I'm just trying to figure out if it's even worth it to upgrade from a aluminum frame to another aluminum frame, as opposed to upgrading to a more pricy carbon frame.

There are types of aluminum tubing that are lighter. Keep and eye out for:

Straight gauge aluminum tubing
Double butted aluminum tubing
Triple butted aluminum tubing
Scandium enhanced aluminum
Magnesium-Zinc alloyed aluminum

There can be a whole lot of difference between types of aluminum.

Higher end frames are usually made from thinner tubing to save weight and improve ride feel. Thinner tubing is more difficult to make and also more difficult to weld into a frame. Prices will significantly higher than for entry-level frames, but you will notice the difference when you ride the bike. Take some test rides and decide for yourself.
