What do I lube?
 

I bought my road bike about a month ago, but I still havent lubed it. What parts do I need to lube? Chain, cassette, derailluer, the part that twists when I turn the handle bars (technical terms).

Im going to home depot to buy Liquid Wrench w/PTFE to do it.

IMO, decent lube choice. Just wipe the excess off. Lubing the cassette isn't nessacary. Lube the chain and derailer pivots. Occasionally the pivot points on the brakes, just be careful to keep the lube off the brake pads and rim. Never put lube in the hubs, headset, and bottom bracket. Make sure it is the green can.

The only thing that goes in hubs, headset, and bottom bracket is grease. I like the Park Polylube 1000 personally.

I have this white lithium grease that I use on some things (got it at home depot too). Can I use that stuff?

For what? On your chain and derailleur? No -- you'll wind up with the dirtiest mess imaginable. On your hubs and headset? Maybe, but you have to take those apart to lubricate them -- you can't just squirt grease in there and expect it to go anywhere useful.

Go back to where you bought the bike and they should explain what routine maintenance you can do on your own like lube. Also your cleats are important to maintain.

As for the reason you don't put oil into things with bearings such as the headset, bb, and hubs, oil tends to dissolve grease. It'll thin it and it will all leak out and the bearings end up with much less lubrication.

yeah, i bought my bike at costco. laugh all you want, but i got 105 all around for 650. yeah yeah yeah... i hear yer jokes. im just a beginner, go build yourlself a 5k bike and feel good.

but yeah, im cheap, and i want to enjoy the sport.

Yes and you can buy the entire 105 triple crank, casette, and brakes, levers for 600 bucks. But to make the ride very enjoyable and going the distance put the money into the frame. After you ride your Costco bike for a few months then go for a ride with the LBS like I did and wonder why those guys are always hundreds of yards ahead of you and wonder why they can ride so fast. Then go to the LBS and test drive what they are riding and you will see the response you get with the bike and you will be like me laying down some bucks for that bike. I just hope you are not one of those hard headed professors we hear so often on the news nowadays. Good Luck.

OR, I'll get so buff riding my new, heavy bike, that the LBS guys will be surprised that I am smoking them on a piece of junk costco bike. ;)
