Virgin Road Biker needing Help

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's a good deal for a bike with 105; presuming you like the ride of the bike. Is this from an LBS - i.e., will you be fitted to it?

That's got some ultra-low gearing - are you going to be going up mountains?

1) The bike does fit within the my parameters. It is a 56cm and I am roughly 5-10'' with a 30-32 inseam.

2) Yes the bike has a triple crank which being new to Road Cycling might not be a bad thing to have for starters.
But is the ultra low gearing too harsh for a beginner ? I live in the Midwest with small hills and mostly flat terrain.

AT THAT price...I'd go for it. I paid quite a bit more for my first roadie (in many years at least) and it has a triple....no big deal. Who knows...you may take the bike on vacation with you to a place that has climbs and need that granny gear. If you don't, don't worry. It is a nice bike, especially at that price.

Cheers,

Brian

Dude, you're still a virgin???

At that price, it is a good deal. Even better if it's at the LBS. Just make sure you try it - nothing can tell you more than a test ride and a good fit. Even though the numbers match (inseam length and tube length) there are always exceptions. A good fit is worth the extra money if it comes to that. Imagine buying shoes before even trying them out... A wrong fit isn't worth the bargain...

Hope this helps...

No, it's not harsh at all - it's just that you'll have gear combinations that you'll never use - 30/27 is about 7 MPH. Nothing incredibly wrong with that, especially as beginner in a hilly area. But I doubt your hills will require that gearing.

There's nothing wrong with it, period, except you're carrying around an extra few ounces. Definitely not the end of the world.

if the bike is basically the right size, ind its clean/straight, go for it!! 853 frame with 105 at $700 is a good deal if the condition is right.

Uh... I just realized this isn't a new bike.

For a used bike, it's not that great of a deal.

The most important thing is how it fits. Take it for a test ride, and not just down the block and back. You could buy a top end Colnago, but if it doesn't fit right you'll hate it.

Is it possible to buy a new Road bike complete with 105's for $500-800?

I thought for a 2004 it was a pretty good deal....

Here is a link to the exact bike...

I am supposed to meet him tomorrow for a test ride and to buy it.
Please help me make the right decision.

Here, tell me, this is how it's gonna go.

I'm a virgin.

Cool! I like that, because I know you don't have... chlamydia. And I *know* that, and that sh*t is everywhere...
