picking the right size
hi all,
i'm so new to road bikes. I've own a mountain for like 6 years, but i don't know anything about it. All i know is the the tire size is a 24".
I would like to get a road bike but i don't know what is the right size for me. I recently got a present for a 26" road bike, but found out that it was TOO big for me. I'm around 5 feet 3 inches.
Please help me find a size that may fit me. My mountain bike's seat is currently raised to around 8 inches high and it feels very comfortable.
will a 19" or 48cm be a good choice?

48cm would be a good place to start. go to a bike shop and see what they say if youre serious.

Road bikes are generally sized in centimeters, and the size generally refers to the length of the seat tube from the center of the pedal spindle to the center of the top tube, or to where the center of the top tube would be if it were horizontal. Sometimes it's measured from the center of the pedal spindle to the top of the top tube.
Anyway, if your "26 inch" bike is measured as above, it would translate to a 66cm frame which is huge. What measurement are you referring to? Is it wheel size by chance? If so, look at the tire and post what it says. And, measure the seat tube as above and post what you find.
All that said, go to www.wrenchscience.com and plug your measurements into their fit calculator. They give instructions on how exactly to take hte measurements, and then will give you an idea of the frame size that you should be looking at.
At 5-3, you'll be looking at a pretty small road bike. A size "small" or "extra small" in the lines that size that way. Probably a 48 or 50 cm in the frames that size that way. You can see why I'm really surprised at what the size of a "26 inch" bike would be - huge - and why I'm wondering what the "26 inch" refers to.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
