Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

cleat position comprimises cadence

Hi

Has anybody set up their cleats a fair distance behind the metatarsal joint to improve pedalling efficiency by using less of the calf muscle and more of the quads and glutes, I'm trying this out at the moment.

I recently moved my cleats 1.5 cm back, where the pedal axle is now 1.5cm behind the metatarsal joint and find that my ability to maintain a high cadence is reduced, although subjectively I think I have more power as I feel I can pull up more on the return stroke.

Do you eventually get use to the position or does your cadence suffer permanently.

I moved the cleats on my road bike back 13mm, and I feel that I have more power when climbing and when pushing a larger gear with a lowish cadence. Having recently restarted track racing since changing the cleat position, I have found that my ability to spin has been reduced slightly. I can't be bothered changing cleat position all the time, so I have recently ordered a second pair of shoes to use on the track bike with a more forward cleat position.

I have my cleats a little farther back on the shoe so that my foot is a little farther forward on the pedal. I know they say the ball of the foot should be over the spindle, but I find that causes numbness, for me anyway. But I don't think it affects my cadence at all (while it does feel like I have more power to put down on the pedal). It's a very individual thing, though. Maybe moving the cleats will affect your saddle height slightly, and that could affect your cadence if you don't change it accordingly.
