Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

weird feeling while riding?

I am in beautiful bethany beach right now, and this morning I went for a ride along route 1. There was a bit of a headwind heading out north that limited my speed to an average of 20 mph, but the positive was a nice tailwind on the way back, that allowed me to be in the 25 mph range for most of the way.

It is so freakin' flat here! I'm normally doing about 16-17 mph...but here it is all big-ring spinning, 53 x middle at 105 rpm. Its a great feeling.

here's where I get to the thread title. around 25 or 30 miles in the ride, I got this feeling like my seat was loose, and with every movement, it felt like my seat was swiveling. of course, the seat wasn't loose, so I'm thinking it was the frame? I wouldn't think that it would flex like this though, considereing it was so flat.

The absolute worst thing that I'm thinking is that maybe I cracked my frame? or could it be just a cross wind? I don't have deep section rims or anything, and it is a skinny tubed 853 frame, so not whole lot of cross wind striking area there...but...I never know. any thoughts?

Crack in the plastic molding of the saddle?
Loose saddle rail?
Loose padding in your shorts?
Perspiration buildup on the saddle surface?

Give your frame a close inspection under a bright light just to set your mind at ease.

The last time I felt that it was a loose cone adjustment in the rear hub. I took it apart to clean and relube before adjusting, I'm glad I did because one of the cones was shot! This is with just over 2000 miles on the wheel set.

Actually I’ve noticed it a couple of times here lately. It feels like the saddle is pivoting with every stroke. I have checked and my saddle is snug. I attributed it to a new pair of gel shorts.

Ha! I know...

I went riding again these two past days...but I did not get the same feeling.

I did notice that my seat was a little of center, i guess it got knocked off center somehow. I wonder if that could have caused it?

I checked out the rails, and they looked intact. I did not notice the seat plastic being cracked, but Rich Clark, you are a genius, I would not have though of any of those things.

I ride with my saddle nose a little off center all the time. Does anyone else do this?

Do you wear shorts with Gel?
My wife bought me a pair thinking she was saving my a$$, but I don't wear them. When I get the old sit bones where they're supposed to be, I find that it feels as if the seat is loose or something weird.

Just a thought...

I do the same thing. In the immortal words of George Carlin, it provides you with "a place for your stuff."

It's a guy thing.

I was afraid that'd be the answer.

Can't say I've ever felt the need.
