Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oakley Range sunglass owner's input sought

I need new sunglasses and am considering the Range model made by Oakley. I would appreciate reviews by users of those glasses. Also please tell me what lens you have.

I used to work at a sunglass shop:
the Radar (Range is one of the lens sizes for the Radar) is basically the updated version (ie latest generation) of the M-Frame. Unless you've got a HUGE head/face, the Range will probably be too big (it's bigger than the largest M-Frame lens, the Heater). FWIW, the honorable Lance used the smallest of the 5 M-Frame lenses. The other two lenses available for the Radar are the Pitch and the Path. They're close in size, with the Pitch having a more "squared-off" profile and the Path having a curved lower edge.

the frame itself is nice and sturdy, and they made a few modifications to improve/eliminate the weaknesses of the M-Frame. these include the straighter arms (for helmet clearance) and an integrated nosepiece (rather than clipped to the lens). they still have the breakaway arms that Oakley is known for, as well as the usual optics. The lenses are also coated with a hydrophobic coating that will bead water, sweat, mud, Sharpie marker... They're pricey, but worth the money.

As far as colors, I'd stay away from the FMJ coatings, as they tend to peel with sweat. Lenses are really personal preference. I like Black Iridium (10% transmission) because it's nice and dark for FL sun. MTBers and guys who ride when it's less sunny (or WHERE it's less sunny) can get away with something like G30, which has a rose base to it with a blue mirror. That's the lens used on the Armstrong Signatures.
