Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ambrosio sonar, radar, wheelsets? ambrosio rims?

looking at a wheelset under $400.
the fact the ambrosio wheelsets are handmade in italy piqued my interest but i am having a hard time finding any information, photos, reviews.

"quality Ambrosio sealed hubs" - who makes them? Ambrosio? or ________ rebadged?

also, if i wanted to give ambrosio a chance anyway, what could/would be the advantages of sticking to campagnolo hubs and asking my trusted local wheelbuilder to lace to ambrosio rims?

thanks!

I think the Ambrosio hubs may be made by Sun Race. Whoever makes them, they have a really good reputation in the UK and retail for 80 pounds or so. They are strongly favoured by some big name wheel builders like Harry Rowland too.

The wheels seem pretty heavy given the rims they are using, so I suppose the hubs must be heavyish. I would bet that the spokes are made by Alpina, in which case they are very good.

thank you for this info. very tempting to give them a roll especially that it is hard to beat the price of the ambrosio wheelset pictured above, at $210 shipped (in the US). a quick calculation: chorus hubs can be had for about $200 + 2x $60 for the ambrosio focus rims = $320 + spokes + any shipping costs + building = almost double. now, there are many choices of wheelsets in the $300-400 price range.

You should consider the Miche wheels at Reparto Corse too. They almost certainly have Ambrosio rims, but with Miche hubs instead. Chorus hubs are getting hard to come by because they were discontinued this year. The new Record hubs are a lot lighter (alloy carrier), but only available in black.
