Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i reckon he's doing about 30kph, maybe less. Any faster and he would've flown further, and the dog wouldn't have laughed it off with his tail still wagging.

Good luck with your 1200g wheel-sets

I'm betting most wheels fold when hitting a 70lb lab at speed.

(and it wasn't my dog)

^ disagree. "Back in my day", the downtube or fork would bend way before the front wheel. I've seen plenty of busted frames, with the front wheel having nothing but a tyre blow-out

that's a pretty soft dog with a good crumple zone

that is NOT reassuring at all

I'm sorry, but I can't help but laugh at the OP's typo in the subject line...

"let a wet taco."

Is that a euphemism for a shart down under?

it would be at much greater impact, and usually a tougher object, like a car

Looks like the fact that his front wheel is turned perpendicular to the direction of travel may have had something to do with the taco'd wheel.

Ah, but who am I kidding. This is BF. Carbon fiber explodes and everyone who buys CF wheels will die a horrible fiery death at the hands of a dog.

As a mod, you should know that carbon fiber is the only material that ever fails. EVER.

I'm sure I saw a quick flash of a flame at the moment of impact

But of course. But what shall it be? The front rim? The fork? The frame? The seatpost? The rear rim?

Clearly, they're going about it all wrong. They should ride ultralight aluminum frames and use sacrificial carbon fiber zip ties for the transponders. So when they crash, the zip ties fail, the transponder falls off, and that takes the entire force of the impact.

Or have to buy Cannondale replacement frames..... Couldn't resist.

The broadside impact, IMHO, caused the failure. It put a lot of lateral force on the wheel. If he had kept the wheel straight I think he would have ridden right over the dog. Thems rims is strong. Like big dudes from Iceland kind of strong.

Hmmmm....I think I want some tacos for lunch.

Sudden deceleration sucks, at any angle.

Physics, however, is cool!

Maybe it went that way sometimes but not always. When I hit a traffic cone head-on back in the day on my lugged steel frame w/ 36 spoke Al wheels the front wheel taco'ed and the frame and fork didn't bend a bit.

Oh, and I agree with Dr. Pete about how the rim failed. The rider is moving pretty slow in this video. He's braking hard and getting ready for the dog collision. He actually unclips and gets a foot down to partially break his fall. What causes the wheel collapse is that the impact with the dog turns the wheel 90 degrees to the right of the direction he's travelling, putting some unusual sideways stress on the wheel.

Bicycle wheels are only strong in one direction. I have run into a tree that bent my fork while the wheel remained round and true.

BUT, if the handlebars are turned to one side while going over them, as in this picture, the wheel will fold. I have done this also. No bicycle wheel will support a rider's weight loaded from the side like that.

surely there's someone else here who thinks that's a lot of damage for relatively low impact?
