I recently purchased a set of Bontrager Race Lites (campy compatable). I am currently running a veloce drivetrain and don't know if the cassette is steel or aluminum. Questions:

1. Is the cassette steel or aluminum?

2. Does it matter?

The reason I ask is that a couple of days ago a guy enter the LBS with his rear hub destroyed "by a cheap steel cassette." I don't want this to happen to me obiviously.

My Campy Record cassette and all its subsequent replacements have always been steel. I don't know if Campy even makes aluminum alloy cassettes. I would imagine all their cassettes are either steel or titanium. Hope this helps.

Is your freehub steel or alloy? On some freehubs that were alloy or Ti when you used a loose cassette(each cog was loose and seperated by a spacer) you could get marking on the splines and sometimes real damage if the cassette was the least bit loose.
Only a few high end hubs have alloy or TI freehubs so this is not an issue most of the time.
