How fast can you ride a slightly-hilly 50 mile route?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How fast can you ride a slightly-hilly 50 mile route?

I know, I know, another useless poll about speed but it's just for fun. And define "hilly" however you want.

NOTE: Your average speed includes all stops/rests, etc.

What I wouldn't give for a slightly hilly route. I have a good route that's an altered version of the Sunday ride of the Hilly Hundred (Indiana's) that I can do in about 3.5 hours. I'm a boat anchor and can't climb worth a darn.

So, in other words, you're saying you're really even faster than that time?

I can't get past that.

But just for kicks, I don't see an option for me up there.

Looking through my ride journal...

I did 51 miles in 2 hours and 56 min....17.4 mph average w/ 3,000 feet of climbing. I had back pain for the last hour, and had to basically soft-pedal the last half hour. I wasn't hammering on the ride, but I wasn't exactly out for a recovery ride either.....just a fairly moderate, "distance" type pace.

Not sure how fast I could do it if I was actually trying to go fast, and my back cooperated.

Same here...my commute route is 50 miles RT and I use it for a training loop when in the mood to train, just under 3k total climbing, come in under 3 hours, between 17-18mph average speed.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is average speed? Is that while riding or does that take into account breaks (2 or 3 on a 50-mile ride for me). 2.7 hours of riding time; 3.3 hours total.

My commute is around 56 miles RT with an amazing total of around 2000 ft of climbing. Roughly 3 hrs or so.

Last weekends recreational ride was 53 miles with 6300 ft of climbing. It took roughly 3.5 hrs or 4. I can not remember which. Of course the ascent is slow going and the descent was somewhere around 45 mph with me trying to keep my speed down.

My computer computes average speed based on moving time, not stopped time. The only 'breaks' I have to take are at the few stop lights on the route, but even if I hit all of them 'wrong' I can still come in under 3 hours total.

Something we never mention...knowing the route has an impact on your average speed and total time.

You need to ride up here in Vermont...

No lights...

Few stop signs...

Maybe a cow crossing the street but if you hit that you need glasses....

You're FOS!

Solo in 2:30-2:40

With a group 2:10-2:20

Last weekend, we did 100km in sub-3:00 with just a medium tempo rolling paceline...

Questions to all the 23+ mph people:

How long did it take you to get that fast?
How old are you? (20's, 30's, etc)
How fast did you go when you really started training?
