With few exceptions drivers are nice to me

I normally do not bike near to home anymore because of traffic and limit myself almost exclusively to group rides. I made an exception today. My neighbor had been out of town for a week and just picked up his new bike and wanted to take it for a spin. I could not resist. New Cannondale Carbon Synapse with Dura-Ace and Ksyrium SL wheels. Nice!

Almost every place that we had to turn or stop motorists gave us the right of way when they did not have to. Our route took us on a state road for a very short distance. Cars behind slowed down so we could make a left hand turn in front of them. At intersections they gave us the right of way when they did not have to. One oncoming driver even stopped on a road so we could turn left in front of him into a housing development we wanted to ride through to avoid the busier street we were on. There was no reason for them to do this.

We did have one car turn in front of us at a 2-way stop sign without signaling. He had the right of way and my buddy was positioned perfectly for a car that was going to cross in front of us. He had to alter his turn and my buddy moved out of the way. He was startled but it was mostly his fault because if he had been signaling my riding buddy would not have stopped so close to the intersection.

I appreciate these courtesies. However this could cause an accident to because technically they are not obeying the traffic laws. In fact it happens so often that I catch myself taking it for granted and have to guard against becoming lulled into expecting this from every motorist.

Because of all the horror stories I hear, I guess that I am saying that I am counting my blessings!

I find I have fewer problems when I am wearing one of my RW&B USA jerseys.

I worry about the ones that never know I'm there more than the nuts that see how close they can get, etc. Today I was riding on one of the few roads hereabouts with a shoulder lane. On two occasions little old ladies came over into the shoulder where I was riding, not very far, but they were over the white line on the right side of the road. I'm sure neither of them ever saw me or if they did, thought they did anything the least bit dangerous.

I really think that's the case everywhere but, unfortunately, it's the jerks that we tend to remember.

Southern California, heh. I don't want to hear it.

I had a financial planning client, a single lady in her late 40's, pull up roots and move to San Jose, CA. She really loves it there and I was glad to see that it worked out for her. What a big change from the Midwest!

If 99.999999% of drivers weren't cool we'd all be friggin DEAD.

Of couse this simple truth probably hasn't dawned on 99.999999% of the idiots here.

And the band played on.

Someone stated that Portland drivers were among the worst for driving ability, aggression, hospitality, etc. I have not witnessed it yet- I also don't "demand" my right of way, I try to get out of their way, and in turn, they have gotten out of mine.
