Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How long does shorts padding last?

I just bought a pair of Pearl Izumi Quest's today, is there a general length of time that the padding in shorts will last?

Depends on quality of pants and how often you ride/wash them.
My Girodana's seem to last a couple of years getting worn/washed once a week.

I generally get about 1 - 2 years out of a pair of bibs. I usually use them about twice a week, which results in two washes a week. I have three pair of bibs, ride about five times a week so it adds up I guess.

About 2 years before they start losing their effectiveness. Sometimes the stretch goes, sometimes the padding. If you air dry them they last longer than if you put them in the dryer.

I've got a pair of the then top of the line PI's that my wife (then girlfriend) bought me in '92. I've bought several other pairs of top PI's through the '90's and early '00's that are all in my "rotation" while riding an average of 3k miles per year or so. The cheap shorts I've bought in the past only lasted a couple seasons.

IOW, expensive shorts are a better value
