Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2011 Allez Comp Compact M2 Apex. Red Rubino Pro Tires, Shimano R540 pedals, FSA Omega compact bars, Specialized Avatar Expert saddle, and a Velocity rear wheel. No white garage door, but I think I got the other stuff right. Now before everyone says to flip it, I've been professionally fitted for the bike and can ride in all positions comfortably. I'll lower it and flip it once my spare tire starts to disappear.

Meh... FLIP IT.

(and slam it).

Seriously though, nice bike! My LBS offered me that exact model, but then I opted for the 2012 Apex.

I picked this one up at a pretty nice discount that made it even sweeter. Besides, my other bike is already black and orange.

Out of curiosity, do you guys know the weight on the 2012s? Varies by size, of course. Triple bonus points if you know the actual frame weight

Don't know the official weight, but mine is a hair over 18lbs... but I have lighter wheels than stock.

At some point I may replace a few other components with lighter replacements (stem, seat post, cranks maybe...), but I don't think I'll go for anything less than 17lbs.

I'm actually pretty happy with the weight as is - I'm 6' / 205lbs and the roads near where I live are pretty rough... Don't want a bike that will crumble underneath me

That's a respectable weight Another curiosity: do those use a carbon steertube, or aluminum?

The fork is carbon, but I think the steertube is AI.

Sweet bike tardman91. I had the same bike which I finally sold last year. (regret)
I invested quite a bit of money into the bike as I loved the frame. I had gotten
the bike down to 16.8lbs as pictured below. Enjoy it man. Awesome frame.

1989 Specialized Allez Epic in carbon fiber. But weighs in around 20 pounds. Replaced the original downtube index shifters with Campy brifters and derailleurs. Did a 90km ride with it last fall. Still a nice ride.

Is that 8sp on the back or were you able to go larger?

By spreading the chainstays 2 millimeters I was able to use a 9 speed (or more) Campy.

Here is mine, 2011 comp frame, with force, specialized carbon cockpit, and chris king/velocity a23 rims. I have blue hutchinson tires on now for the crappy weather, normally it has black s-works turbo pro's

Hi tardman, can you tell me what LBS you bought this at? I'm looking to buy one when I get home next week. I live just up the Suncoast from you.

Thanks,
Joe

I bought it at Chainwheel Drive. They have two locations. One in Palm Harbor, one in Clearwater. They are probably low on 2011 models, but their prices are always below MSRP. They sponsor the Suncoast Cycling bike club and are just all around awesome. Great sales and service staff.

'93 Allez Comp. Getting ready to part ways with it. I'll probably regret selling it, but I just never ride it since I bought my CAAD. Nothing "special", but I always thought these were pretty nice looking. Rides great too.

If it's good enough for Kevin Costner, it's good enough for me.
