Where do you keep the camera?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I usually carry my Nokia 6600 camera fone in my back jersey pocket but I have thought about taking a powershot type camera and putting it into a velcro arm pouch but I can't find one. Should be comfortable enough and very accessable

Little Panasonic FX-01 Lumix, stacked in my seatpack along with my phone. Today's tiny cameras are so good that a DSLR is overkill for most any shot I can anticipate grabbing on a ride.

I plan on getting a camera phone. So I won't be able to make posters of the beautiful landscape I see, but I can share them on the web.

a buddy bought an olympus that is water and shock proof. we've taken it rafting, hiking some of the AT and kayaking. it has been submerged and dropped from at least 4 feet. i will see if i can dig out some shots for samples of quality.

here is a link:

i doubt a little sweat and a drop while riding would harm it.

I take photos on almost every ride and almost every photo while moving. I have a camera case that is open at the top, I velcro the belt loop on the case to the stem and use it like a pistol holster facing up. It's the fastest and easiest way. And probably the ugliest. It looks pretty fugly. NO sweat this way, and yes, I carry a sandwich bag for rain protection.

Jersey pocket or bento box
I use a Nikon D200 but bought a Fuji Finepix F31 FD and I'm amazed at how good it is.
Cheap enough that if I break it a won't kill myself. I'll cry a lot, but I'll let myself live.
At 6 megapixels it even make good sized prints possible!

Canon S5-IS with a lens adapter and hood in a Case Logic TBC-7 bag. That bag has a waist belt. I wrap it around the drops and pull the belt tight.

god topic forst off, I keep it in my under seat pouch, somebody mentioned using a DSLR, now I'm a semi professional photographer and I love my DSLR to death but this is a perfect instance of "time and place" to use a DSLR, with an slr you need to use 2 hands and you also need to peer through the veiw finder rather than just looking looking at the LCD screen, so frankly I think taking pics with a DSLR while riding may not be advisable, sometimes using the little point and shoots really is a better option.

+one million

i'm a professional photographer, been in the business for eight years. i know gear and i know from first hand experience that these are great little cameras, or at least the olympus 720 SW is (that's the only one i've personally used). now, obviously i don't use these in a professional environment (that's what the canon 5D is for) but they are great when you need something small and durable (love love love the fact that they are shock/drop proof and waterproof). they really are perfect pocket sized cameras in my opinion. i've recommended these models to at least three friends/colleagues and they have all been very pleased with them as well.

happy shooting.

I carry a Ricoh GX100 in a jersey pocket with something between it and my back to keep it dry. Usually an item of clothing like a jacket, or ziploc bag "wallet". I rarely carry anything bigger than a P&S on the bicycle.

I carry a little Fuji FinePix model, and have some freinds that really like their little Cannon Sure Shots. Both cameras are small, about the size of a wallet, and take great simple-pictures (nothing fancy, mostly point and shoot), and are innexpensive enough so that I don't worry as much about dinging the camera while riding with it.

I prefer to carry mine in a tiny, water-proof, shoulder-strap type camera bag. I set the shoulder-strap length such that the bag hangs right above my belt-line when in the front, and while I'm riding sling it up as high as it will go on my back and behind the opposite shoulder from the shoulder strap, just behind my arm-pit. In that position, it does not slip down and get into my way while riding, and is still handy for a taking fast pictures of wildlife and such. Some situations don't give you enough time to stop and fish around in your seat bag for the camera.

I don't want to drop my Canon SD800, so I made a cord loop long enough to go around my neck, and allow the Canon to fit in my back pocket. The cord goes through the wrist strap that came with the camera. I can hold the camera with two fingers and not worry about it.
Here's a picture of it from the BF ride (I'm in the foreground, you can see the cord):

Panasonic DMC-FX7 in my jersey pocket, no ziplock or case, it survived multiple centuries and temperatures from below freezing to the 90's without a single complaint.

Another idea I've seen people use is if your camera is small enough certian arm pouches meant for ipods will fit a little camera nicely.
