Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help me decide on a bike

I was looking at the Buenos Aires back in 2003, then we moved, had a daughter, and now i'm getting some time to ride. I never bought the BA but it fit me well, I guess now the tech has changed a bit and I would like to stay around $1K if possible...less would be good and if I need to go used then that's fine. I would like to keep the weight down in the critical areas like the wheels and obviously the frame but I think wheels play a huge role. I'm not looking to race but I do like to keep the weight down and get something of quality, I understand shaving ounces makes for easier pedaling. Any input is greatly appreciated.

If you are just getting into cycling and your budget is $1K, you can't afford to worrry about shaving grams or ounces. Remember, you will need some additional equipment beside your bike, from a pump and flat fixing tools to helmet, shoes, bib, etc. I'd advise you to hunt for a used bike on craigslist, maybe by asking through upir local club or LBS and if you have the stomach for it then ebay. Be patient, know what you are looking for and only buy a bike that fits you. If you've never been fitted, you can use the DIY tool at competitivecyclist.com.

Good luck!

I kinda forgot what the BA went for but haven't searched around yet...wanted to get opinions on the current crop of bikes compared to the ones of 2003-2004. I really like the Zurich but was out of my budget and the BA was around $1500-1700 if I remembered correctly. I was fitted for a BA, have the apparrel and ride my wifes OCR1 from time to time but I need one now. I guess $1500 should be my budget...don't think I can get what I want for a grand. Not new to riding, been doing that for about 30 years but haven't owned a "nice" bike.

I wanted to add that when I was measured it was definately a toss-up between the 55 & 57 CM models. If neither really bother my back...55 seemed better being giving me a more upright posture, but all things being equal (almost) is a shorter tube better than a longer if i'm not racing? I tested both bikes and couldn't tell much difference but maybe there's some science involved that I don't know about. I could easily reach the bars on the 57 but not sure how I would be benefitted so anyone that "fits" bikes please chime in....thanks again.

It's the end of the year. Look for sales at your local LBSs. Most base models list from $650 to $800. They usually come with Shimano Sora group. Not bad, but if you have $1500 to spend, you can upgrade to a better group. Personally, I like 105, 10 speed (I'm looking at a new bike myself). I think its worth it for the long haul. You should be able to find some year end bikes on sale now, well within your budget. I've seen Giant OCR-C 3's , all carbon frame, 105 10-speed with nice wheels for under $1500.
As for fit, that's what a good bike shop does. Good luck with your search.

I went to me LBS tonight and rode 3 bikes, 57cm Lemond Buenos Aires, 55 cm Zurich, and a Specialized Roubaix. Last time (2003) I tested two BA's 57&55 and was torn between the two. Tonight I took the 57 BA out first and it felt just a tad big, couldn't get over the front wheel too much off saddle and it felt a bit loose. Then the 55 Zurich and it really felt better, not just for the weight but I was more upright and not too stretched out. I'm 6'0 w/ 32" inseam and my slightly tall back makes the fit a little difficult.

Then came the Roubaix.

As soon as I sat on this one, mind you it's a 58cm model (the elite) so I was skeptical cuz of the reach I had on the Buenos Aires, something just felt right...I was way more comfortable and the reach was perfect. I rode a mile or so...not alot but man did that thing fit like a glove..honestly when I returned I didn't even ponder the Lemond's anymore. I asked what can we do to get this thing on a diet so i'm looking at the comp or the expert....prolly the comp because the price is more appealing to me.

I highly recommend the Roubaix, definately consider it and test it if you are in the market..awesome bike.

The Lemonds have a longer top tube than normal and that will stretch you out and the Specialized Roubaix is designed for a more upright riding position.

Buy the bike that best fits you, but be warned that what fits you now may not be the bike that fits you best in the future.

I figure for the next 4-5 years, I should stay the same...hopefully. I don't know how the Lemond's and the Specialized differ but being 1cm longer it just fit so well, if I can get the weight down to the zurich's level that's the bike I want...or even lighter.

I bought a 2004 Zurich used "like new" last week off of e-bay for 1k. The LBS wanted $2100 for a 2006 model ! As best I can tell the Zurich/BA was originally an all steel frame but about 2002 they began building steel-carbon frames which have gotten great reviews (see roadbikereview.com). This year they began using aluminium instead of steel - I have seen no evaluations of the 2007 models. If you know what you want keep your eye on e-bay (several listed last week). I looked for a high volume seller with lots of positive feedback.

Nice catch on the Zurich, I believe the frames are full carbon now...including the Buenos aires.
