Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Vintage Cilo find....thoughts?

Well, my fiancee was looking for a road bike. our budget was about 400, but you can't get much for that price new these days. A family friend of hers told us about a "race" style bike he had built for his wife 25 years ago. He couldn't remember the name. He said back when he built it, he had almost $1,000 into building it. Apparently she rode it around the block, and decided that that style bike was not what she wanted. He hung it up in his garage, and there it sat. We picked it up for $200 (hope thats not too much for this bike, it seemed like a good deal).

I rode it around the block and figured we wouldnt find a better bike for the money, paid the man, and took it home. Put a few dollars into it; a new saddle, new brake hoods, bar tape (she had to have pink) and new tires, and SPD pedals.

I cleaned it up, lube it up and took it on a short 2 mile ride, and holy moses, for 25 years old this thing flies. The original owner told us it weighed all of 19 pounds, and i believe it. According to the cycle computer, I hit 29.5 mph on flat ground around the subdivision. The difference between a rode bike and mountain bike is rediculous. My Scott mountain bike will do 21mph DOWN HILL.

Anyway, I'm jealous now, and hope I can run into a find like that.

Hope we didn't get burned on it. Seems nice (I don't know what kind of brakes those are)

I personally know nothing about vintage bikes but for a bike that has hardly been ridden I would say its a great deal. Hell how much do you think all the alloy on that bike is worth by itself?

Looks like its in great condition but I would clip the cabling down on the front brake. Oh and the bar tape doest really go well with the blue... but if she has to have it.

What is she gonna be using it for?

That is a nice bike. Columbus SLX is great stuff. $200 is a smokin' hot deal.

Hmmm, where have I seen this bike before...

I still don't know anything about the components but the bike looks nice.

I think those are Dia-Compe's ... one of their better models. If you took the brake off, I'm pretty sure it says Dia-Compe stamped on the backside of the caliper. Looks like Sugino Cranks ... again the better model. Overall good components. A notch below Dura-Ace or Superbe.
