why does Shimano 9sp costs much more than shimano 10sp?

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been checking ebay for a pair of ultegra 9sp shifters to run on my commuter bike. However, auction ends up costing as much as a pair of brand new 10sp shifters, and sometimes more. This is insane. I thought older stuff SHOULD always cost less. Maybe shimano gets better with age.

I've seen Campy Chorus 9spd brifters selling for almost $200 for a nice set on ebay.

For the most part though, older campy stuff is relatively cheaper than older shimano. Veloce shifters are by the far the best bang for the buck if you run 10 speed.

Supply and demand issue.
9sp shifters have more demand than 10sp shifters on eBay. Like you, many upgrading to 9sp not to 10sp.

There's a LOT of items that sell on ebay - used - for prices very close to new, sometimes even more than new. It's incredible.

I've seen quite a few used Ultegra cassettes recently and most of them are selling within a few dollars of what you can get them for new if you do a tiny bit of internet shopping.

As for your experience with 9 speed stuff, it could be this phenomenon (ebay buyers paying "new" prices for used stuff) or it could be the market forces others have described. My personal opinion is that it is the ebay overpaying phenomenon. Very few "good deals" on stuff like that on ebay.

I have a set of Ultegra 9spd brifters for sale, no more than 800 miles on them used for one season. I'll throw in a Flightdeck too for $150

Someone on my local cl is selling a dura ace gruppo for 600 bucks. I was really tempted to dig into my pockets for it but realized it'd be a waste for me for the foreseeable future.

I've seen plenty of ebay auctions go for more than retail price. Ebay used to be a place that you could get really good bargains, and you still can, it is just longer between drinks.

I've seen countless auctions that go for more than retail price, and all the winning bidder needs to do is go to any website or department store and get it cheaper. Plus they still need to add postage, assume risk of fraud, loss of items during postage, sometimes no warranty etc, etc, etc.

I think some people bid on ebay just to increase their feedback rating. A bit like forum post counts.

Which i have to say are actually really nice, well the STI shifters anyways. I got them on my CX bike (everything else is 105) and they feel great.
