Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is this rose bowl? Is it a sports complex? A track? Why are there cars on it?

The rose bowl is USC's football stadium in Pasadena, CA. It is the location for the 'Rose Bowl' BCS game obviously. A very pretty area with a historical past.

Video was nice and I can see why some people would be intimidated. Hell, I was riding by myself on a path in a park in my city and didn't know bicycles were not allowed on it. Two women started yelling at me that I'm not allowed on it, even though I never came close to hitting them and went off the path to pass them. Imagine what those women would have been like with 70 cyclists going 30 mph. Some people are just too anal. I think the history of the Peloton taking place there for over 40 years is more important than some simple pedestrians that don't know how to use common sense. I think the city should solve the problem by repainting some of the pedestrian lines to separate them from peloton some more.

From video:
And Steve wasn't present on Monday because he was on vacation...with his family...on a...bike"
"riders slip on their spandex" (Kraftwerk's "Tour de France" plays in the background...*sounds of men gasping and grunting repeatedly in background*)
And then at the very end....
Ehh good enough
Ahh small time reporters...simply hilarious.

Ah... it helps to see the video. Thanks, anyway.

Anyone else find the video to be biased?

You've had a tough few years, then - what's that - 3 Rose Bowl losses in the last 4 years?

I can see why someone thought the Rose Bowl was SC's stadium since we win there so often. SC wins MOST of it's games there, but wins ALL of them at the Coliseum.

The reporter was crazy, it looked like he was waiting for the peleton and actually tried to stay in. One fall from him w/o a helmet during this and it wouldn't have been good. I have never ridden here on teusdays and thursdays yet but have watched. I think it's awesome and healthy for the city and the community. Once I think that I have enough speed and endurance to ride I will for sure do this as well. But until then I think by staying away I'm saving some lives lol.

Couldn't they:

a) add a buffer lane
b) Post signs "High speed cyclists in area. Look both ways before crossing the street."

That video looked so cool.

It's horrifying to hear the strength in your voice that rises from being in a group. Riding in a peloton is not a difficult skill. It does not make you strong. It does not make you frightening. It does raise the ire of local politicians. This is a very bad bet for cyclists anywhere because those politicians live for their constituents - and there are a lot more runners and dog walkers than cyclists.

Pick a fight you can win. And, if you need the strength of a group, don't pick a fight at all.

I don't think the cyclists picked the fight. More like the fight picked them.

Reporter was obviously biased...you could taste his loathing. It was palpable.

However the reported plainly stated that it was Tuesday and Thursday nights only, for 10 laps of 3 miles each...so a maximum of 1.5 hours on the road. The peloton (peloton...peloton) was outside of the walking, jogging, and stroller lanes, and was only really in conflict with the cars.

There is a lot of miss information flying around in the forumsphere about this subject. I highly encourage those interested in this issue to educate yourself more about the issue by going to some non-biking related sources. Here are a few links:

Star News report (local Pasadena paper)
Star News video report

Staff Report - Pelaton Bicyclist - Rose Bowl (This is a report from City staff making recommendations to the City Council how the City feel the Council should vote. Rarely does the Council go against the recommendation from Staff.

City Council Meeting on the issue (The item comes before Council starting at minute 9. This is long but the most important thing to watch. If you want to know what your government is doing then you need to understand what they do, how they do it, and their motivation. We cannot sit back and shoot pop shots from the bleachers, you have to get out there educate yourself and tell those in power what you think.)

That does look like a blast but I agree that is unsafe for the cyclist and other user. Either they should close the corse for the group or the group should just take over the roads.

As a UCLA Bruin, I shuddered upon reading that. It's like someone saying the Russians landed the first man on the moon.

The Rose Bowl is UCLA's pride and joy. And USC, well, I'll hold my tongue.
