Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OT (sort of) Re-entry from Canada

My girlfriend and I are headed to Canada to do some cycling at the end of the month, but we're still unsure of whether or not she'll need a passport to get back into the States. Everything I've read only mentions air travel not needing a passport for re-entry. Does this mean you do or do not need a passport if you're traveling by land? I can't find anything online.

The rules requiring you to have a passport at land border crossings have, at this point, been delayed until 2009.

It will probably be delayed yet again after that as the Customs people have figured out, surprise, that many people do not have passports and they are not properly equipped to produce that many new ones.

No passport, but you'll need state i.d. and a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Is your GF a US citizen? If not, she needs a passport 100%.

If you have a passport bring it. If you don't have a passport order one.

+1 on the birth certificate and drivers license. I have made several trips into Canada and although the border guards have not asked for my BC, they have the right to do so. Best to be safe.

Better to bring a passport if you have one (and better to get one if you don't), but birth certificate and license should be OK.

This is interesting, because for us Canadians a drivers license would do, no need for a BC. I still usually bring the passport just cause I have it so I figure I might as well use it if I paid for it, but my friends have gone through with just the drivers license many times.

If you have passports, bring them. If not, picture ID (driver license) and/or birth certificate. Passports are mandatory for children as I understand it, but currently only very strongly suggested for all others.

usually it's just the driver's license, but we technically should have our birth cert too. i always find reentry to canada harder than entry into the U.S., btw.

Oh wow, I've had times where I was driving back to Can with my friends (of various colours ) and they didn't even ask us for ID... I found it strange, but yeah.... I dont know, maybe they also go by the license plate (same car left today, now it's coming back) not that it's a good system. I've also had customs search my car and find nothing
